| | OCTOBER 20268UltraTech Cement has an-nounced a board-level leadership change. Managing director K.C. Jhanwar will become non-executive vice chairman from 1 January 2027, after K.K. Maheshwari steps down from that role and from the board, citing other commitments and personal obligations. The board approved the changes on 19 October. Jhanwar's tenure as managing di-rector ends on 31 December 2026. A chartered accountant, he has led the company since January 2020, having joined the Aditya Birla Group in 1981 as a management trainee. His career spans finance, operations, mergers and acquisitions, and post-merger integration across the cement and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has said negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement are progressing at an extraor-dinary pace, with the major items already completed. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, he echoed External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's as-sessment that both sides are very close to finalising the deal. Gor declined to share specifics, leaving announce-ments to the ministers. He contrasted the speed with the India-EU Free Trade Agree-ment, which took almost two decades to conclude. Asked about possible sanctions re-lief for India under the Lind-sey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, he said the decision rests with the US president. INTERPOL and the World Health Orga-nization have signed a cooperation agreement to tackle threats where public health and security overlap. The framework combines INTERPOL's law enforcement exper-tise with WHO's public health leadership. The partnership will cover emergencies needing joint responses, including India's defence ministry has finalised two contracts worth about Rs.4,106 crore for the armed forces. The larger, valued at Rs.2,563 crore, was signed with NewSpace India Limited for the GSAT-7C communica-tion satellite, which will give the Indian Air Force a secure, dedicated link beyond line of sight. The second, worth Rs.1,543 crore, went to Bharat Dynamics Limited for additional Varunas-tra heavyweight torpedoes for the Indian Navy. The torpedo carries over 95 percent indige-nous content. The contracts were signed in New Delhi. Both deals align with Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India, and the satellite reduces the Air Force's reliance on shared or commer-cial networks.
