Over the decades, the institute has seen a steady increase in funding and donations, particularly for research and development (R&D) projects. The major funding sources include grant-in-aid (72.5 percent), industry and government-sponsored initiatives (13.3 percent), consultancy projects (9.7 percent), and internal projects (3 percent). The institute has been exemplary in utilizing the funds it received. For instance, the institute has undertaken 3,550 interdisciplinary research projects, aligning with government initiatives like Make in India, Clean Energy, and Swachh Bharat. The institute has also played a key role in fostering 140-150 startups, generating 1,200 crore in revenue.IIT Hyderabad provides multiple avenues for charitable contributions, including initiatives that equip economically disadvantaged students with laptops. Donors can contribute to a General Purpose Fund, which supports various institutional needs, or allocate funds to specific projects and endowments. Additionally, contributions to the alumni association help foster student and alumni-driven initiatives, enhancing engagement and support within the community. On the other hand, if donations to IIT Hyderabad were eligible for 50 percent tax exemption previously, now the institute has been officially recognized as an Institute of National Eminence by the Income Tax Department, meaning donors will get 100 percent tax exemption under Section 80G of the Income-tax Act, 1961.
