| | DECEMBER 20204PM Modi on his twitter said that the historic PM WANI (Wi-Fi Access Network Interface) scheme that has been cleared by the Cabinet today will revolutionize the tech world and significantly improve Wi-Fi availability across the length and breadth of India. It will further `Ease of Doing Business' and `Ease of Living'. Indeed this was a great move by the PM and the country as a whole towards being a digital economy. This is going to turn out to be a lucrative opportunity for the internet service providers (ISP) as the Public Data Offices (PDOs) who cannot provide internet on their own will turn leasing it from some other ISPs to use their physical location to provide Wi-Fi to anyone who happens to be nearby. This indeed is going to boost the internet consumption further in the country, which already stands high in the global internet consumption ranking. Indians were already consuming nearly 12 GD data per month on an average in 2019. But Ericsson predicts this number to touch 25 GB per month per user by 2025. Now imagine the scope of growth ISP holds. On the other hand, the country noted a 3.4 percent quarterly growth in internet subscribers by March 2020, taking the count to 74.319 crore, reported TRAI. The best factors adding to this growth are low cost of internet and constant increase in the number of smartphone users. India's biggest strength is its growing adoption of smartphones and digital applications in the rural areas and they are going to play a major role in making PM WANI a great success. While India is gearing up for 5G launch next year, with Reliance Jio expecting to bring its 5G network by first half of 2021, there still lies a range of challenges the industry needs to deal with.
