| | OCTOBER 20254India's art industry is at an interesting juncture. As tradition continues to make common grounds with the outrageous pace of technology, especially Generative AI, the art market has been on a roll, expanding to an estimated Rs. 3,000 crore today. In 2024, art auction sales in India reached a record turnover of Rs. 1558.97 crore (approximately $187.6 million), marking a 21 percent increase compared to the previous year and making it one of the strongest years for the Indian art auction market. Yet, the sector remains just a sliver of the international scene, with persistent challenges that inhibit broader, more equitable growth.Authenticity and forgery challenges continue to erode buyer trust, particularly in the absence of transparent certification for artwork. Most prominent art opportunities cluster in urban centers like Delhi and Mumbai, limiting wider access and stifling rural talent pipelines. The high cost of original works and lack of government infrastructure restrict entry for emerging collectors, suppressing a truly democratic marketplace. However, a surge in online platforms and digital innovation in 2025 is bridging old barriers. With young, tech-savvy consumers embracing virtual galleries, NFTs, and direct-to-artisan marketplaces, the sector is experiencing unprecedented democratization and reach, supported by rising government and institutional patronage.I would like to appreciate the efforts of Kadamhaat.com, which exemplifies new-age empowerment in this landscape. With a network of over 10,000 artisans, this brand not only brings eco-friendly, handcrafted goods to millions of homes but also uplifts rural communities by championing skill development, sustainability, and ethical trade certification. Kadamhaat's mission to empower 1 million artisans with world-class design skills while setting benchmarks for environmental and social responsibility is a beacon for the industry and sets a gold standard for others to emulate.
