Deepanshu T

Chief Technology Officer

The business world operates on very different natives to the tech world. The tech side is fascinated by building new innovative products while the business side wants products that can move the needle and make an impact in the market today. In my experience, being early is almost equivalent to being wrong, so one needs to keep an arsenal of new features and products ready so as to capitalize on them when the time is right while at the same time balancing them with the requirements from the business end today”, says Deepanshu T when asked about how businesses can cope with the rapid changes happening in the corporate realm. A pioneering Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Deepanshu works for Persistence and his ability to stay updated with the latest trends, innovations and technological advancements have helped him to guide Persistence towards sustained success in the industry.

In an exclusive interview with CEO INSIGHTS, Deepanshu talks more about his professional journey and how he has been able to break new business frontiers with Persistence.

1. Give us a brief detail about your educational professional background and how has it helped you to chalk out successful business strategies for Persistence?
I completed my graduation from Vellore Institute of Technology, in computer science and started my first job at a Fintech company called Comviva on a B2B mobile POS payment system. The computer science background definitely helps to give me a head start with software development and architecting skills. Although I don’t think a CS background is a compulsion for making it big in development. My job building fintech solution from the ground up integrating almost all common payment methods into one app while taking care of payments and privacy compliance and performance engineering taught me a lot about good design and architecting. I took this learning to the crypto world which at the time was not very compliant and enterprise-centric.

My main job at Persistence is to design and implement the core road map for the products, anticipating
the future market requirements and ensuring delivery of maintainable and stable production-ready products. The world of crypto moves at a breakneck pace with very little to no documentation on the new innovations created in the space. As a CTO, one needs to constantly keep in touch with the current developments and ensure we invest good amounts of time into future innovations while building tech for today’s requirements as well.

2. How do you ensure to update yourself with the latest industry trends and technologies so that you could always steer your organization towards the zenith and what are some of the latest technologies that you have deployed in the organization?
At The rate at which the blockchain and open-source technology development happen, one could not depend on the traditional ways of keeping up to date like newsletters or through books or videos. I think the best way to keep pace with the latest trends happening in the industry is to arrange for and have direct conversations with the teams building in the space and exchange knowledge about what each of us is trying to achieve.

When it comes to my mentorship activities, being part of the blockchain and open-source ecosystem, communicating and evangelising the tech we’ve built is one of our quintessential responsibilities.

At Persistence, we’ve been working on asset tokenization and decentralized exchanges for a while now, with our first product being Comdex which is a decentralized high seas commodities exchange. The blockchain has been live for about 1 and a half years now having facilitated over 50 Million US dollars plus in transactions volume. It has brought out a huge change in the behaviors’ of the high seas commodities trader that used to depend on rudimentary communications technologies like yahoo messengers to negotiate, execute trades and for record-keeping, to now using cutting edge blockchain technologies for trading and record-keeping among many others.

3. In your professional journey so far, which are the milestones that bestowed you with utmost satisfaction - both as an individual and as a Technology Leader?
Each successful deployment, each month of the product running
without glitches or bottle-necks is a milestone on its own. To enumerate a few of the major milestones, deploying our first alpha net called crust-2 which is now over 9 million blocks old without any glitches was one of our biggest milestones. The chain itself had some ground-breaking technical innovations for its time like the world’s first interchain NFT transfers, NFT decentralized exchange engine and so on. Since then, we have gone on to take multiple products to production, with very recently launching the main net for persistence chain and token (XPRT).

4. Explain your experiences with respect to communicating technology strategies to partners & investors. Also, do you participate in any mentorship programs or give keynote speeches in conferences & seminars to share your industry insights with your peers?
Being a tech enthusiast it’s really easy to get carried away and put out more on the table than what is required and risk losing the attention of the listeners. What I’ve learned is that if a product or a feature can’t be explained in one or two simple sentences then it’s too complex to sell to investors or consumers.

When it comes to my mentorship activities, being part of the blockchain and open-source ecosystem, communicating and evangelising the tech we’ve built is one of our quintessential responsibilities. I’ve co-founded a community called Cosmos India and have organized multiple hackathons at colleges and universities. Because of the Covid scenario, I had to shift all the seminars to online web conferences, which contrary to expectations have seen great turnout and response. The most recent hackathon we did was called Hackatom Russia, where we saw some really good participation and submissions.

5. Are you a gadget-savvy person? Which are the apps that take most of your screen time?
Goes without saying. I like building my own computers and servers, following the whole process of shortlisting components, sourcing them and troubleshooting. I probably spend most of my screen time on my office computer staring at GitHub reviewing code or on telegram communicating with the community and teams building and integrating with us.
