In recent years, there has been a significant increase in low sperm counts and male reproductive system abnormalities among men. The causes of these issues include sedentary lifestyles, environmental conditions, and addiction to drugs, alcohol, and smoking, among other factors. Unfortunately, many male reproductive problems are considered embarrassing, leading to a lack of identification and treatment in general practice. Men are often reluctant to seek healthcare unless there is an acute medical need and are hesitant to discuss reproductive issues. This is where Andrologists can make a significant impact.

Dr. Chirag Bhandari is a well known Andrologist and Male Sexual Health Consultant with extensive experience in Male Factor Infertility and Male Reproductive and Sexual Health Problems. Dr. Chirag's journey to becoming an Andrologist was not defined by a single moment but rather by a series of events that fascinated him, motivated him, and inspired him to learn and pursue his passion.

In an interview with CEO Insights, Chirag Bhandari,a renowned Consultant Andrologist & Medical Director of Bhandari Hospital Research Centre and founder of the Institute of Andrology and Sexual Health, shares his journey as an Andrologist, his motivations, and insights into the current healthcare landscape. Read on to learn more about this accomplished professional.

Can you share with us what made you choose medicine as a profession?
I decided to pursue medicine as a profession after completing my graduation in the field. Working in various hospitals and gaining training in robotic surgery helped me understand the importance of catering to the specific needs of men with reproductive health problems. As I began exploring solutions for urological and reproductive issues, I discovered the field of Andrology and decided to specialize in it. I was fortunate to receive fellowship training in Andrology in London and started my Andrology journey at University College London Hospital in 2017.

I am qualified to treat patients with a variety of conditions, including male infertility, impotence, and premature ejaculation thanks to my expertise and andrology training. My research interests include male factor infertility, erectile dysfunction, penile prosthesis implantation, Peyronie's disease, microsurgery, penile rejuvenation, premature ejaculation, and penis enlargements. As a member of numerous international and local forums, including ISSM, SASSM, ASRM, and the American Society of Andrology, I am also constantly engaged in research pertaining to issues with male reproductive health(ASA).

What are the challenges you have seen in the Andrology landscape and while treating patients?
As an Andrologist, I have faced several challenges in the landscape of male reproductive health. One of the major challenges is the lack of awareness and stigma surrounding these issues, which prevent men
from seeking medical help. Many men feel embarrassed or uncomfortable discussing their reproductive problems, which can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, the cost of treatment can be a barrier for some patients, as many healthcare facilities do not provide cost-effective and safe treatments for male sexual health issues.

I try to create a comfortable & trusting environment where my patients can feel at ease & share their problems without hesitation

In my practice, I have worked to address these challenges by devising my own protocols and strategies to provide affordable and safe treatments for my patients. I have also established the Institute of Andrology and Sexual Health to make these therapies accessible under one roof at a reasonable price. However, there is still a lot of work to be done in raising awareness about male reproductive health issues and breaking down the stigma associated with them. As a member of several international and local forums, I am actively involved in research and advocacy to improve the Andrology landscape and to provide better care for my patients.

What do you think is the root cause of sexual issues in men and how do you address them?
Sexual problems in men have become increasingly common in recent times. The pandemic-induced work-from-home scenario, along with pressures, chaos, tensions, and stress, has contributed to the rise in such issues. As a doctor, I have encountered several patients with sexual and other related problems. From my experience, I have observed that most of these problems are caused by a hectic lifestyle, sedentary work, and the use of recreational substances like smoking and alcohol.

As a physician, I believe in a friendly approach to treating my patients. I try to create a comfortable and trusting environment where my patients can feel at ease and share their problems without hesitation. After carefully listening to their issues, I suggest modifications and lifestyle changes that they can adapt to overcome their problems. These changes may include regular exercise, a balanced diet, stress management techniques, and the avoidance of smoking and alcohol.

In addition to lifestyle changes, I also offer a range of treatment options such as medications, surgical procedures, and therapies. For example, I use penile prosthesis implantation and microsurgery to treat erectile dysfunction, while premature ejaculation can be treated with behavioral therapy or medication. I always prioritize a patient-centered approach, and I believe that the best treatment plan is one that is tailored to the individual needs and preferences of my patients.

Could you tell me about your leadership approach? What are the guidelines or methodologies you follow as a leader to lead your team?
As a leader I strongly believe in building a cohesive and motivated team. I encourage a culture of openness and communication where everyone has the opportunity to share their ideas and concerns. I value the importanceof learning and development, and therefore, provide my team with opportunities to improve their skills and knowledge. I also believe in leading by example and working alongside my team to achieve our goals.

I provide regular feedback and recognition to my team members to keep them engaged and motivated. As a leader in the industry, what advice would you like to give to the upcoming healthcare industry leaders?
As a leader in the healthcare industry, my advice to upcoming healthcare leaders is to never give up on their dreams. It is essential to work hard and overcome obstacles to achieve their goals. They should not hesitate to push themselves out of their comfort zones and be willing to accept failure. Resilience is crucial, and they should continue working towards their objectives, despite setbacks. Success is not easy to achieve, but it is possible with persistence and determination. I would also advise them to prioritize patient care and put the needs of their patients first. It is crucial to be empathetic towards patients and to provide them with quality care. Lastly, I would advise them to stay updated with the latest technology and medical advancements and to continue learning and improving their skills.
