There's been a dramatic shift in corporate practices and consumer expectations as a result of the Internet's accessibility, smart devices' proliferation, and the introduction of modern technology. Almost anything can be acquired with a single click these days, from clothing to groceries to books to stationery then why not fuel and energy. Gautam Malhotra noticed this potential in 2016 and started FuelBuddy with his two co-founders Adnan Kidwai and Divij Talwar, India's first startup to offer door-to-door fuel delivery, which is now set to pivot to other forms of Energy as well.

In an exclusive interaction with CEO Insights, Gautam Malhotra the Managing Director of FuelBuddy spoke about his leadership journey so far.

What inspired you to venture into the oil and gas segment, and what drives you today as an industry leader?
I believe in network effect & the impact of disruption that can be achieved with it. We consider all our team members, partners, stakeholders, alliance partners, etc. as a part of our deeper network penetration across the country. I have worked in a variety of geographies and roles throughout my career, gaining substantial expertise in managing and building new markets and consumer segments throughout my 17 years professional career. Later, I was on the lookout for opportunities to create something disruptive. It is with this vision that FuelBuddy was setup; the objective was very clear: to become the top Energy distribution company in the country.

Additionally, what motivates me is FuelBuddy's dedication to providing convenience at the customer's doorstep with assurance of quantity &`quality of fuel.

How would you define FuelBuddy as an organization and its position in the market? What is the unique
proposition that your organization offers to clients?
Today, FuelBuddy is India's largest doorstep fuel delivery company, covering 55 + cities throughout the nation. While in terms of FuelBuddy's overall positioning, when a customer requires fuel delivered to their doorstep, we are there to facilitate them through our technologically enabled tools; they can order through our app and receive the fuel at their specified time and location.

In addition, we have been consistent in our commitment to both the quality and volume in our offerings. To elaborate on our USP, when you buy fuel in India today, there is no method in existence to verify the quantity and quality of fuel purchased. FuelBuddy, on the other hand, provides a guarantee to customers and allows them to check the quality and quantity of their purchases every time.

We are already serving 55 + cities More than 30,000 downloads of our app is a testimony that our customers are widespread and are satisfied with the service they are receiving.

What are the major challenges you have encountered in your journey so far? How did you overcome them and what did you learn from them?
As category creators, we are the first in the country to start a new segment, there fore it has been a ardous yet fulfiling journey First and foremost, our biggest challenge was navigating the regulations so we worked together with them to bring our vision to reality. We collaborated with the relevant government authorities to obtain the necessary permissions to distribute fuel to customers in India and got immense support from Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, DPIM, & NITI Aayog.

Then the second most significant challenge was inertia, as the majority of our consumers in India were unfamiliar with this notion. In the beginning, we had to spend a lot of time convincing the consumer that, indeed, fuel can be delivered to their doorstep. For example, we devised a unique selling proposition that we used to communicate our
value to the customers. Finally, with the support of a competent team on both the operational and business sides, we have been able to overcome all of our challenges and maintain a position in the market.

How do you maintain the perfect balance between your personal and professional life? What is your success mantra?
Launching a startup company comes with a lot of responsibility. It's challenging to strike a good work life balance in this kind of environment. Nevertheless, I am a morning person and use my early morning hours for personal activities such as reading, meditation and yoga. Right now, we are working six days a week since we're at the growth stage and need to invest a lot of time. Henceforth, I devote Sundays to my family and friends. Sunday also involves a game of cricket in the evenings. That's how I'm able to balance both my personal and professional responsibilities. When it comes to the "success mantra", I'll state that it
requires a great deal of self-sacrifice.

In the light of your strong experience as a prolific strategic advisor, what advice would you give to the budding industry leaders?
Based on my experience, I would advise that one should believe in certain fundamental values, which we do at FuelBuddy as well. Apart from this, I believe every new leader should practice constructive entrepreneurship, which involves creating things, managing them, and collaborating with people in order to spread one's own ideals to others. To be a successful professional leader, one must have excellent communication skills, which is a crucial characteristic to possess. Develop a product or service with a focus on the needs of your consumers in mind. This will help your business build strong relationships with your clients and, as a result, succeed in the market.
