Mark Zuckerberg is anticipated to testify as a key witness in a rare $8 billion trial starting this week, where the Meta CEO faces allegations of running Facebook as an unlawful operation that permitted the unauthorized harvesting of users' data.  Meta Platforms shareholders, the parent organization of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, filed a lawsuit against Zuckerberg and other current and former executives, claiming they repeatedly breached a 2012 accord between Facebook and the Federal Trade Commission aimed at safeguarding user data.

The incident traces back to 2018, when it became known that Cambridge Analytica, a now-dissolved political consulting agency that aided Donald Trump's victorious 2016 presidential campaign, accessed data from millions of Facebook users.

Shareholders are seeking reimbursement from Zuckerberg and the other defendants for over $8 billion in fines and expenses incurred by Meta following the revelation of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which includes a historic $5 billion penalty levied against Facebook by the FTC in 2019 for breaching the 2012 agreement.

Defendants in this case consist of ex-Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, venture capitalist and board member Marc Andreessen, along with former board members Peter Thiel, co-founder of Palantir Technologies, and Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix.

The trial without a jury in Wilmington, Delaware, is set to span eight days. It will primarily concentrate on events from a decade ago and board meetings to assess how Facebook executives executed the 2012 agreement.

The trial will address past policies but takes place amid ongoing privacy issues plaguing Meta, which faces examination regarding its AI model training practices. The firm claims it has poured billions of dollars into its initiative to protect user privacy since 2019.
