In a close interview with us, Capt. Patnaik shared his valuable professional journey with us.

What key professional milestones and achievements have played a role in shaping your career to its current state?
I began my career at sea, commanding various vessels, including bulk carriers, tankers, and container ships, providing a strong maritime operations foundation. Transitioning to shore-based leadership, I served as a CXO for a TATA Group shipping company in Dubai. I successfully established it as a global brand in dry bulk shipping and led it to become the group's most profitable shipping and logistics enterprise.

After nearly 20 years with the TATAs, I became the Managing Partner and CEO of Panbulk Shipping DMCC in Dubai, focusing on ship owning, chartering, and ship management, with plans to expand into other shipping
segments such as tankers and container vessels. I also contribute to the maritime industry by sharing insights at major shipping and Maritime events, such as the Ports & Industrial Corridors Conference, Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit, and the India Maritime Conference.

How do you mentor your team to deliver client solutions, and what best practices do you emphasize?
As a leader, my focus is on aligning my team's thinking with the company's vision and identifying any gaps in their approach to business. This allows me to tailor mentoring and training to each individual. Given that shipping is a constantly evolving industry, with changes in regulations, risks, and practices, I emphasize the importance of continuous learning.

The foundation of success lies in crafting a clear and achievable vision that not only sets the direction for long-term strategy but also unites the organization under a shared purpose

To support this, I conduct regular training sessions and encourage the team to participate in external courses and conferences. I also hold weekly or biweekly sessions where team members prepare on specific topics, and senior leadership joins to provide insights, fostering an open exchange of ideas and promoting ongoing develop- ment.

Given your extensive experience in the industry, what challenges excite you today and how do you approach strategizing to tackle them?
Shipping is a highly cyclical and volatile industry, making it crucial to manage that volatility and implement a robust risk management framework. These two factors are essential for maintaining a sustainable business. The excitement in this industry lies in the unpredictability of what might happen next. Every day brings the challenge of managing potential volatility, whether it’s anticipated shifts in the market or unforeseen events.

To stay ahead, it’s important to continuously innovate and re-engineer business processes, adapting to the changing global landscape. For instance, no one predicted the war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 Pandemic, restricted transit through the Red Sea or the imposition of sanctions on critical countries. Such unpredictable events can severely impact business, especially if operations are heavily tied to affected regions.

Therefore, it's vital to diversify and have contingency plans in place. Managing these risks effectively comes with experience and constant learning, keeping up with global developments to stay ahead of the curve and make informed decisions.

Looking ahead, what new opportunities or develop- ments do you foresee in the industry from your perspective?
As a cornerstone of global trade, shipping is an indispensable industry that will always remain vital to the movement of goods world wide. The primary challenge lies not in its existence but in continuously enhancing its effectiveness to meet ever evolving customer expectations while simultaneously creating value for internal and external stake holders. This requires a balanced approach that combines operational excellence, strategic innovation, and a commitment to sustainable growth.
To remain competitive, it is essential to adopt forward-thinking practices that address current demands and anticipate future trends, ensuring the business remains agile and adaptable in a dynamic market. To stay ahead of the curve, we are committed to innovation and diversification, continually exploring new segments. This expansion allows us to tap into emerging opportunities while catering to specialized customer needs.

Additionally, sustainability is a key focus, as we align our operations with the Inter national Maritime Organization's (IMO) carbon emission goals, striving to exceed these benchmarks wherever possible.

By prioritizing environmental responsibi -lity, we contribute to the global effort to combat climate change while enhancing our reputation as a forward looking organization.

Our strategies are informed by rigorous analysis of industry reports and market trends, enabling us to assess supply demand dynamics effectively. Collaborating closely with leadership teams and stakeholders, we ensure that our business processes remain aligned with the shifting landscape of the market and the environment. This integrated approach positions us to deliver value while driving progress in a critical, ever-evolving industry.

What advice would you give to a leader starting or looking to set benchmarks in this industry?
For emerging leaders, the foundation of success lies in crafting a clear and achievable vision that not only sets the direction for long-term strategy but also unites the organization under a shared purpose. A well-defined vision acts as a guiding compass, enabling leaders to focus their efforts and resources effectively while inspiring their teams to work collectively toward common goals. This clarity is essential for building resilience in an ever changing business landscape, as it ensures that every action taken contributes to a larger, well-articulated objective.

Equally important is assembling a strong, well trained team that aligns with the leader's vision and values. Effective leaders recognize that their organization’s success depends on the people within it, and they invest in cultivating a workforce that shares a commitment to the mission. This involves not only recruiting top talent but also identifying and addressing any weaknesses within the team to foster growth and improvement.

Creating an empathetic and highly engaged culture is critical, as it promotes trust, collaboration, and a sense of belonging among team members. Leaders must also prioritize continuous learning at all levels, understanding that industries are constantly evolving, and organizations must adapt to stay competitive.

Ongoing training and development programs are essential to keeping skills sharp and teams prepared for emerging challenges, enabling the enterprise to thrive in a dynamic environment. By adhering to these principles, emerging leaders can build resilient, forward-looking organizations that are poised for sustained success.
