Pediatrician

Pediatricians play a crucial role in ensuring the health and well-being of children. However, being a good pediatrician is not just about having medical knowledge and expertise. It also requires having a friendly attitude toward child patients and their parents. This helps build trust and establish a positive relationship with them. When children and their parents feel comfortable with their pediatrician, they are more likely to communicate openly and honestly, leading to a more accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. In this regard, a pediatrician such as Dr. Prasant Kumar Pandey, who is approachable, empathetic, and a good listener can provide emotional support and guidance to families navigating their child's health concerns.

Below is an excerpt of Dr. Prasant Kumar Pandey’s exclusive interaction with CEO Insights magazine.

How has your professional journey been so far? And what inspired you to build a career path in pediatrics?
After pursuing MBBS from a reputed Grant medical college, in Mumbai, my journey began as a resident in the psychiatry department at IHBAS Delhi. Two years of hard work and dedication opened the doors to a new opportunity, a prestigious pediatric cardiology department. It was here where I had the pleasure of crossing paths with a truly remarkable individual, also my mentor and a famous Pediatric Cardiologist of India.

Walking alongside him, I was struck by the sheer inspiration of witnessing sick children transform before my very eyes. Their once feeble bodies now brimming with life, jumping up and down on their beds with joy. A phenomenon that was rare to come across in adult patients. It was at this moment that I knew pediatrics was my calling and I pursued my post-graduation (DNB) in pediatrics at Batra Hospital Delhi.

As a doctor, nothing brings greater satisfaction than healing the little ones. The smiles on their faces, the hope in their eyes, it is a feeling beyond measure. And so, it was with a renewed sense of purpose that I embarked on this new path, determined to make a difference in the lives of those who needed it most.

Tell us about your leadership approach and what has been your success mantra so far in your journey.
As a leader, I firmly believe that my personality and work ethic sets the tone for my team and reflects on the overall success of the organization. To ensure a positive work environment, I adhere to a professional routine and uphold all professional ethics. This principle is a rule that I always follow, and I am proud to say that it has resonated with my team members as well.

Within the span of just two years, Dr. Pandey Children's Clinic has gained an excellent reputation & is now considered one of the top pediatric clinics in the city

My success mantra revolves around the art of counseling, which I learned during my time as a secretary for two years. In today's medical practice, doctor-patient conflicts are common, and counselling plays a crucial role in addressing these concerns. In my consultations, I allocate 10 minutes out of the 15 minutes to counseling, especially in pediatrics where patients and parents often have numerous worries and issues. It is not only about treating the patient but also making parents aware of the problem and providing effective solutions. These counseling techniques have proven to be an added advantage to my skills as a pediatrician.

Define Dr. Pandey Children's Clinic's current position in the child healthcare industry and what are the kinds of impacts delivered through its services and offerings.
Within the span of just two years, Pandey Clinic has gained an excellent reputation and is now considered one of the top pediatric clinics in the city. This accomplishment can be attributed to the hard work of my experienced and compassionate team. Despite not providing emergency services at the clinic, I have taken measures to ensure that our patients have access to round-the-clock care. This has been made possible through my affiliation with the hospital, which provides emergency services whenever required.

The key to my approach is in cultivating an adept and capable team, one that can oversee every facet of patient care with the highest level of professionalism. I make it a point to personally train and educate my team members in handling the concerns of parents with sick children, as well as other fine details of patient care. Through this concerted effort, we can offer exceptional care to our patients, which in turn has helped our clinic gain a reputation for excellence.

Share with us about your expertise in guiding parents to understand and take the right informed decision regarding their child’s health.
In today's medical practice, it is essential to not only treat the patient's illness but also to provide counseling to alleviate their anxiety. For Pediatrics, it is especially important to address the worries of parents as well. As a healthcare provider, I prioritize educating my patients and their families on the disease, the prognosis, and the preventive measures that can be taken to ensure the child's long term health. Prevention is key, as we are dealing with the future of our nation.
It's not just about treating the illness, but also about preventing it from occurring in the first place. For instance, Anemia, a prevalent single organ deficiency, affects nearly 60 percent of the population in certain regions of India. This is where the focus on prevention comes in, and I make sure to emphasize this aspect to my patients and their families.

Which are the best medical practices you bring into the clinic and how do they differentiate it from other child healthcare providers in the industry?
Communication is key in any medical practice, and that's why I've fully digitized my clinic to ensure that I am always accessible to parents and their little ones. My team is well-versed in pediatric issues and is available to communicate with parents 24/7, which sets us apart from other clinics. We understand that parents may not always require a consultation or medication for their child's condition, but may have questions about home remedies or basic care. That's why I've personally created a team that is able to address these concerns and provide helpful advice whenever needed. Even when I am not available, my team is always there to solve their queries and provide reliable guidance. At the end of the day, it's about providing the best possible care and support to our patients and their families.

What is your anticipation regarding the future changes in the market and how do you plan to help Pandey Clinic invest its time in moving forward? How do you perceive the role of digital tools in adding value in the pediatrics/child healthcare domain?
In the wake of the COVID-19 epidemic, teleconsultations have emerged as a promising area in the medical field. Even though teleconsultations existed before COVID-19, the pandemic has brought the concept to the forefront and has opened up new possibilities. In the coming years, I believe that online consultations will continue to grow and flourish, offering immense potential for healthcare practitioners. As a pediatrician, I understand that treating a patient is not limited to just providing medical care. Many times, parents seek basic consultations, such as nutrition advice or tips on how to take care of their child. With online consultations, I can easily connect with patients from anywhere in the world and provide them with the necessary advice and guidance. The future of online consultations is bright and full of possibilities.

What advice do you have for budding industry leaders?
The key to organizational success is reflecting a professional attitude towards all stake holders. Hard work is also essential and there is no shortcut. Remember, your organization's personality is a reflection of your own.
