Hospitals play a vital role by offering crucial medical care that saves lives. Hospitals possess the necessary facilities, expertise, and skilled medical personnel to stabilize patients and deliver essential treatment in emergencies like accidents or severe illnesses. Founded in February 2004 to honour the renowned Padma Bhushan Dr. L H Hiranandani, Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital faced significant challenges in its early days. Their goal was to transform the developing hospital into a lasting symbol of healthcare excellence in the country. Recognizing the need to innovate rather than simply replicate existing standards, they embarked on a journey to redefine healthcare norms. Dr. Sujit Chatterjee, the CEO of Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital, has been instrumental in guiding the hospital's efforts towards promoting a healthier society.

During a personal interview, Dr. Sujith provided us with firsthand insights into his industry experience and offered valuable perspectives on the continuous advancements in the medical field.

Can you provide a concise overview of your professional history and achievements? Additionally, what drives you daily?

I am a gynaecologist with an MD in gynaecology from the Armed Forces Medical College. After completing my degree, I joined the Navy and served for 25 years before transitioning to infrastructure leasing and financial services. Sub-sequently, I spent 22 years with the Hidden Learning Crew. Currently, I serve as the Chief Executive of Dr H Hiranandani Hospital. My motivation stems from Dr. L H Hiranandani's remarkable contributions to the field of surgery, particularly Head and Neck Surgery, which have brought India international recognition. As his name graces our esteemed institution, I am driven by the desire to uphold and further enhance his legacy of greatness.

How do you characterize Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital as a company, and where does it stand currently in the healthcare industry?

The Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital, situated within Hill Side Avenue,
Hiranandani Gardens, offers tertiary and quaternary care services. In a challenging healthcare landscape, we distinguished ourselves by being the first hospital in Mumbai and the western region of India to attain the prestigious NABH accreditation in 2007. This achievement marked the beginning of our journey towards excellence. Subsequently, our commitment to quality care earned us notable accolades, including the Krishna MyCharge National Quality Award in 2008 and the Asia Pacific Quality Award for healthcare in 2009 and 2016.

Our hospital operates with a strong emphasis on processes and the delivery of high-quality care, positioning us as leaders in the industry. Notably, we were recognized as the top hospital in the central suburbs by Mentee, while the Times of India's review of hospitals, conducted by AC Nielsen, ranked us among the top 10 hospitals in India and in the top three in the western region. These accolades reflect our unwavering dedication to providing exceptional healthcare services.

The key to success lies in possessing expertise in your field & demonstrating compas-sion in your inte-ractions

How does the hospital use health information technologies for healthcare decision-making and investigations? What are the latest tools employed for both investigations and treatment?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when cases surged worldwide, including in Maharashtra and Mumbai, we faced the challenge of treating patients with a disease for which treatment protocols were still evolving. To address this, we collaborated with Wipro to develop an AI-driven predictive model to anticipate patient outcomes. By focusing on the endpoint of patient survival, we worked backwards to establish criteria for predicting whether patients would have favourable or unfavourable outcomes upon admission. While the model may not be foolproof, it provides valuable insights into treatment success.

Our hospital is technology-driven, with a dynamic hospital management information system regularly updated to ensure effective methodologies. Additionally, we have invested in life-saving equipment like the Impella micropump, which can support patients experiencing cardiac arrest by maintaining blood flow until further treatment options, such as
heart transplantation or assistive devices, can be explored. These advancements highlight our commitment to leveraging technology for improved patient care and outcomes.

What are the latest barriers to making healthy lifestyle decisions? How can we support individuals in making better choices for their health?

In today's fast-paced world, instant grati-fication poses challenges to maintaining healthy lifestyles. Long commutes and busy schedules make it difficult to prioritize proper nutrition and regular exercise. Convenient but unhealthy options, like junk food, become tempting choices for commuters, including hospital staff reliant on train travel. Despite efforts to offer healthier meal options, peer pressure and family preferences often steer individuals toward less nutritious foods. Moreover, hectic lifestyles leave little time for exercise and health check-ups, leading many to postpone these vital activities. To combat these challenges, there's an urgent need to promote mindful eating and prioritize health maintenance to prevent potential metabolic complications.

Share with us your leadership style. What principles or strategies guide your approach as a leader?

As a leader, I believe in leading by example and fostering character development within the organization. I strongly advocate for institutional discipline, as it contributes to the cultivation of a robust organizational character. When individuals take ownership of their roles and responsibilities, they exhibit a sense of pride and mastery in their work.

This allows me to entrust them with tasks, confident that they will execute them effectively. By providing guidance and leading from the front, I empower my team to navigate challenges independently. Demonstrating leadership during difficult times reinforces trust and solidarity among team members, fostering a culture of mutual support and accountability.
