With the advent of Generative AI tools such as Chat GPT, Bard, and others, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a ubiquitous reality in human life and occupied a permanent corner in our vocabulary. Generational leaps in software innovations have created a flurry of AI tools. However, this has created an inflection point in computer hardware and semiconductor. No longer capable of handling the increased demands of AI computational workloads, current computers, and computer-chips are in dire need of a paradigm shift. Conventional approaches to building semiconductor chips no longer work for AI.

Gajendra Prasad Singh (GP Singh), a seasoned tech professional with over 26 years of experience in advanced semiconductor chips, recognized the nature of this problem and harped on a difficult journey of creating AI Microprocessors that are programmable, providing high-performance cost effectively while still consuming low power. To realize this vision, he co-founded Ambient Scientific along with a team of visionaries from California Silicon Valley. GP’s extensive technical experience and several leadership roles with prestigious companies in building cutting-edge chips contributed to his deep understanding of not only the scientific first principles required for such breakthrough innovations at the grassroots level but also the business acumen to ensure practical feasibility.

Ambient Scientific has pioneered ground-breaking AI chip technology that addresses the three difficult challenges of high-performance, low-cost, and low power consumption for AI Microprocessors while still providing programming flexibility for software applications and scalability to build a roadmap of products for business viability. This unlocks the huge potential of building affordable AI-powered electronic gadgets as small as a 'ring' for healthcare applications at low-end, and ultra high-performance servers and supercomputers on the higher-end.

In an exclusive interview with CEO Insights, Gajendra Prasad Singh enlightens us more about his profession and Ambient Scientific.

Can you provide a brief overview of your professional journey and the experiences leading to Ambient Scientific?
After completing my dual degree in Physics and Electrical and Electronics Engineering at BITS Pilani, I began my career as a system analyst at the National Informatics Center in India. I then worked in France for a year through a collaboration between a French and an Indian company, which later became Freescale. Subsequently, I worked at Sun Microsystems for a decade, building cutting edge high-performance Microprocessors called Ultra Sparc. Over the years, I worked in various leadership roles, including director, CTO, and VP of Engineering for different semiconductor companies. In 2017, I co-founded Ambient Scientific to develop advanced AI Microprocessor chips that are truly designed for AI computing starting from grass-root science level thinking of Electrical and Computer sciences. I am glad that AS team has achieved the technological breakthrough that provides a solid foundation for realizing our vision to become the AI Semiconductor leader.

Can you share your experience at Birla Institute of Technology (BITS) and the important lessons you learned during your academic journey?
My experience at the Birla Institute of Technology (BITS) was memorable and transformational. BITS is a magical place. Apart from enjoyable hostel life, BITS provides the style of education that fosters scientific thinking and exploration. The curriculum encourages interdisciplinary and flexible learning. This freedom and exposure broadens students’ horizons and shapes them to become ambitious explorers. One particular course that immensely interested me was device physics. Its understanding combined with my exposure to cutting-edge chip-building became a key differentiator in my career. BITS teaches fundamental science which I use extensively. This has been instrumental in my professional journey. The tendency to explore, instigated in all BITSIANs, gave me the courage to take on a difficult
challenges we expected to face at Ambient Scientific.

Could you tell us about Ambient Scientific's current position in the market and its unique approach to building AI chips?
AI represents a new paradigm in computers, making them think like humans. But this advancement is expensive. Ambient Scientific has developed many breakthrough technologies to address the problem. Our technologies enable high performance at affordable cost while still consuming significantly lower power. Our smallest AI processor GPX10 achieves once considered almost impossible, battery-powered AI functions in miniature, affordable devices with minuscule power consumption while our larger chips (GPX4000) power servers for cloud/data centers. Rethinking of a problem and its solutions at fundamental levels is the key to Ambient’s achievements.

Tell us about your leadership approach. What are the guidelines or methodologies you follow to lead your team?
My leadership approach focuses on cultivating a culture of exploration, thereby encouraging the team to question the status quo and illuminate newer avenues of problem-solving, improvements, and optimizations. By constantly asking 'why', we eliminate inefficiencies and enable continuous learning and growth. Our philosophy is to continuously push boundaries for improved outcomes. We embrace challenges, and if something is deemed impossible by others, we consider it a good opportunity for us. We take mentorship seriously and invest in the growth of succeeding generations. We have an evolved internship program incorporating many unique ideas and methods.

What is the future destination you are heading towards?
Ambient envisions to be the leader of AI chips in industry and establish ourselves at forefront of thought, technology and innovations akin to IBM in past. We anticipate surpassing the current established companies using the strength of our innovations, hard work, and a long-term vision.
