The Indian foundry industry provides metal castings and components to a wide range of industries, such as Automotive, Railways, Construction Equipment, Valves and Pumps, Defense, including others. Owing to further growth in the industrial infrastructure in the country, the foundry sector has been experiencing rapid growth over the years under the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. An accomplished professional with more than 33 years of experience in a wide range of sectors, such as material handling, pneumatics, and Steel Foundry, Indranil Dutta joined Datre Corporation in 2006 as the Head of Marketing before rising to the rank of CEO in 2010. Under his guidance and inspiring leadership, the organization has grown multifold and is considered one of the leading Engineering manufacturing firms rather than just a steel foundry firm.

In an exclusive interview with CEO Insights, Indranil discusses Datre Corporation as an organization and its current position in the market, his leadership and governance approach, and much more:

Define Datre Corporation as an organization and its position in the market. What are the quality assurance procedures followed in your organization to deliver the best quality products?
Datre’s progressive philosophy to promote exclusively as an Engineering manufacturing company rather a steel foundry has helped build its reputation and grow as a problem solver than just as a generic casting supplier. With quality and innovation at the core of its inherent business model, and a constant strive to develop products of excellence, Datre has always been acknowledged for its industrial proficiency.

Datre quality assurance(QA) system
is designed to ensure complete customer satisfaction through requirements stated and implied through meeting. The quality assurance process at Datre starts with the Advance Product Quality Plan (APQP), considering all the customer requirements, and is followed by the internal production approval process (PPAP) with Failure Mode and Effect Analysis(FMEA). Appropriate corrective and preventive actions are taken after a thorough extensive root cause analysis against any non-conformances, both internally and with customers.

Constant engagement with people at all levels can fetch more subtle business ideas than conventional textbooks

Tell us about your leadership and governance approach. What are the guidelines you follow as a leader?Tell us about your CSR initiatives.
Leveraging my past work expertise in networking with people as a sales personnel, I try to imbibe this human connect philosophy, even while dealing with my internal team. The complexity of the internal team, which comprises both white and blue collars, is relatively more challenging as they themselves represent different socio-economic communities back home. While they play different roles within a common working group professionally, building a successful team while responding to different and new challenges has always remained a complex game changer. Constant interaction and trying to be part of each solution help to solve critical problems acknowledging everyone’s ideas but finally deciding on my own instinct, while taking the final call. The ongoing macro headwinds event was a real case study for leaders like us, where textbook solutions were found to be non-existent to handle the lifetime crisis we are part of.

Being a small company and with the plant located quite far off from mainstream city life, all of us live and work as a family while trying to engage ourselves beyond the professional domain in various periodical opportunities, such as
pujas, picnics, gardening, and cleaning exercises, which happens periodically.

Going forward, what are the changes in market behavior that you anticipate and what are the opportunities that you foresee? What advice would you give to budding industry leaders?
Against the backdrop of changing demographics and ever evolving socio economic behavioral patterns, change is now a constant phenomenon for leaders to aspire for. The only thing that can help us progress is inheriting flexibility and maneuvering through the changes pragmatically and seamlessly. Continuous learning and real time application in the action zone seem to be the panacea for progress in today’s context.

The advice I would like to give to budding entrepreneurs is to remain patient as being the key to success. Instead of relying on others' instincts, think deeply, remain confident in all situations, and take time before making a critical call. Networking is also valuable in today’s context, and constant engagement with people at all levels can fetch more subtle business ideas than conventional textbooks. With India being a complex market, experience in handling multidimensional problems can make one richer in ideas than any other means.
