In an exclusive interview with CEO INSIGHTS, Ravi Thummarukudy talks more about his professional journey and how he continues to reinvent himself to be a trailblazer in the market.

Could you give a brief account of your professional background and experiences?
I completed my bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Kerala University and master’s from IIT Madras and worked as a Senior Scientist at ISRO before joining TCS. At TCS I got introduced to the exciting field of VLSI Design and I have been involved in the Semiconductor Industry ever since. With TCS, I moved to Silicon Valley and later I joined Cadence Designs
Systems one of the pioneering companies in Electronic Design Automation (EDA). At Cadence, I expanded my horizon and traveled around the world meeting key customers and partners. But after seven years at Cadence, chose to be an entrepreneur and started the first company with a couple of my friends. We built that company to over 600 employees and later it was acquired by L&T Infotech. After a five-year gap, my co-founders (Gopa Periyadan, Amit Saxena, Srinivasan Durai) and I started Mobiveil where I am serving as the CEO for the last 11 years.

Could you tell us about the unique experiences IIT Madras offers and what did you learned from the campus beyond academics?
IIT is an institution where you learn a lot more than academics. It was my first time staying away from home and there were plenty of exciting things to do in campus be it in arts, sports or entertainment. The biggest learning at IIT is that talent needs to be combined with perseverance to achieve one’s goals. It’s a casual yet highly competitive environment and you got to balance your studies with extra curricular activities and special interest groups. But I never lost track of my passion for electronics and there were many opportunities for learning and research as we had some of the best professors in the field at that time.

You possess thirty plus years of experience. How has been your path to success and what is your success mantra?
Curiosity in everything around me and the quest to consistently improve myself has been my motto. Very early on I became passionate about the field of electrical engineering and that led me to electronics and semiconductor development. I had the opportunity to travel around the world and interact with key customers and
partners while also learning about different countries, their culture, cuisine, and others.

What is the motivation that fuels your daily routines?
We are a decade old company with a startup mind set and every day brings excitement of growing our business and expanding our team. We are excited about the opportunity to help our customers accelerate their product development and we have always been in growth mode and there are no dull moments in a day.

Tell us about your leadership approach. What are the guidelines or methodologies you follow as a leader?
I am a believer in motivating and guiding my team to accomplish our goals and leaving how to accomplish it to their creativity. I don’t micromanage their day-to-day work but focus on reviews to meet our organizational goals. The management at Mobiveil is keen to listen to the personal aspirations and challenges of employees and provide as much support from the organization as possible. We believe in an open work culture where any level of employee can interact with our management staff. When we see a spark in people, we encourage them to step up and take additional leadership responsibilities. We are very excited to see how junior employees join our organization and grow to become leaders and experts in their fields.

What is the future destination you are heading towards?
I am always motivated and excited about the latest and greatest electronic products that are being developed around the world. The excitement has been nonstop, and I see this industry as having great potential for the future. The advent of AI and how it is going to impact product development and our lives, in general, is an exciting prospect.
