Dr. Sudipta Narayan Roy

For more than 150 years, Homeopathy is one of the affordable as well as one of the most reliable healthcare approaches followed widely across the country. With an estimated annual growth of 20 percent, the homeopathy industry is one of the major healthcare industries across the country with a sustainable future as people are gradually preferring it to avoid the side effects of allopathy medicines. However, people’s awareness of this specific holistic healthcare approach has been largely gradual with many of them still knowing a little about Homeopathy. Since joining his family business of Homeopathy medicine manufacturing in 2009, Dr. Sudipta Narayan Roy has been tirelessly working to spread customer awareness regarding Homoeopathy across the country. Under his able leadership, the firm has become one of the leading Homoeopathy manufacturing organizations in India and is currently going through a corporatization process to become a listed company very soon. A multi-talented as well as multi-faceted leader, Dr. Sudipta is also the Chairman of ASSOCHAM National Ayush Task Force which has been instrumental in spreading customer awareness regarding Ayush medicines across the country.

In an exclusive interview with CEO Insights, Dr. Sudipta shares his early education and learning experiences, his idea of a perfect work life balance, and much more:

Shed some light on your professional background and experiences. What inspired you to venture into the healthcare and wellness segment?
After completing my graduation in Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery from Calcutta University, I did my Entrepreneurship (SMEP) course at IIM Ahmedabad. After that, I did my Diploma in Integrative Homoeopathy from Germany and then completed my Diploma in Integrative Oncology from the UK. It was my father, Prof. Dr. Sailendra Nath Roy, a first-generation entrepreneur, who was the inspiration behind my decision to enter into Healthcare and Wellness
Sector. An academician as well as lead professor, he established Powell Group, which I am currently looking after due to his unfortunate demise in 2009.

I am also inspired by my mother Rita Roy, who is 70 years old as well as being the Chairperson of the Group, doesn’t need to be involved in the daily operational activities of a professionally run company, but however still she visits the medicine manufacturing units every day with her sheer spirit of service. Belonging from a family where majority are from medical background, I always had a natural inclination towards Healthcare. During my schooling days at Purulia Ramakrishna Mission, Swami Vivekananda’s ideology had a huge impact on me and have always motivated me to serve humanity.

Tell us about the learnings and experiences that you had acquired from IIM Ahmedabad and how do you apply them in your current role?
I had an enriching experience at IIM Ahmedabad where one of the major learnings that were taught to us was about value addition to the society through your business. Business is not all about profits, to build a sustainable business, you need to identify a problem statement in the society and come up with a tangible solution in the form of your products and services, and it has been something I have been following throughout my journey in the Healthcare and Wellness Industry. My early learnings of service to humanity inculcated in me by Ramakrishna Mission also resonated in my IIM learnings more professionally.

Define Powell Laboratories as an organization and where is it positioned in the industry?
Established in 1975 as a Homeopathic medicine manufacturing company, Powell Laboratories is an old and established name in Homoeopathy. Considered as one of the top 10 Homoeopathy companies in India, the ISO 9001 firm has WHO GMP compliant state-of the- art professionally run manufacturing facilities and is presently getting corporatized from being a family run small scale enterprise to an organized corporate business. Post pandemic, the Homoeopathy market has seen an enormous growth of around 14 percent globally and even better in India with a growth rate of around 20 percent. Keeping the current market scenario in mind, we are in an expansion mode and are planning to come up with a lot of innovative products as well as corporatizing our marketing department along with capacity enhancement at all of the manufacturing units.

What are some of the major
challenges you have experienced in your journey so far? How did you overcome them and what did you learn from them?
One of the biggest challenges I faced after joining the business in 2009, due to unfortunate demise of my father was the unfavorable political and bureaucratic pressureas well as political interferences in business. As an SMEhaving manufacturing unit it was a huge challenge to sustain the business at that point of time. Now, however, things have enormously changed in terms of support from the government for the SME and startups. Spreading customer awareness is another major challenge that we usually face in the Homoeopathy industry. To take care of these issues, I joined as a member of ASSOCHAM (The Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry of India) and formed a Task Force known as ASSOCHAM National Ayush Task Force and have been leading it. The Task Force has been working as a bridge between the industries and government in terms of policy advocacy, customer awareness and so on.

How do you maintain the perfect balance between your personal and professional life? What is your success mantra?
When you are a doctor and have been working in the SME segment, to be honest, it’s very difficult to maintain a perfect work-life balance. You will miss birthday parties, you will miss family functions, and you may not be able to keep a lot of promises and expectations of society. You may be labeled as a snob or insensitive or even a misfit and unsocial boring person. But at the end, your commitment towards your purpose would write your success story. Revolutions are made with sacrifices, not with privileges.
