The Chief Legal Officer (CLO) is an expert and most powerful legal executive of a company who with his/her expertise minimizes the legal risks and provides advice on any major legal and regulatory issues the company confronts. They keep the company abreast of legal changes that may affect their firm. A CLO typically needs an extensive career in law. Mostly, people who have experience in positions like head of legal, first general counsel, or firm partner is chosen for this position.
The duties and responsibilities of CLO may vary from organization to organization. The position may include keeping the executive leadership informed of new or changing laws that may affect or relate to their operations and industry. They may also conduct curriculum programs in case it is necessary for employees to understand legal matters and protocols relating to company operations.
The typical duties of a CLO includes developing and leading corporate legal strategy to promote & protect the company's matters, developing & leading internal audit and corporate compliance programs, overseeing delivery of legal services & resources to accomplish corporate goals, strategies & priorities, ensuring the maintenance of proper interactions with relevant local, state & federal governmental bodies, providing necessary advices for senior corporate officers during necessary times, and participating in the formulation of general management policy as a member of the executive management team. They are also responsible for managing a team of corporate counsel and other members of the legal department.
