The Revenge Shopping Syndrome: What's for India?

CEO Insights Team, Press Release

Revenge isn’t usually good for health, but revenge buying can turn out to be positive for your mental health and for your country’s economy too! Post the pandemic lockdown in various countries were lifted partially, people started revenge buying. Countries like China and South Korea are already witnessing this trend, especially for the luxury segment. In China, the French brand Hermes’ Guangzhou flagship store alone witnessed $2.7 million in sales on the day it reopened last month. This turned out to be the biggest single-day shopping at a luxury outlet in China.

Since the relaxation in lockdown in India, and the permission to e-Commerce companies to sell both essential and non-essential items, the market has picked pace and is witnessing upward growth.
Companies like Amazon, Snapdeal and Flipkart are not just witnessing increasing search on their platform but also an increase in the number of items being added to their cart or being ordered. From apparels to appliances, air conditioners to electronic items like mobile phones and mobile accessories saw the maximum orders being mostly placed by tier II and III cities.

Due to the impact of the lockdown, the future orders will be more from the high-class people and low from the middle and lower middle class people, as we still have time to come out of the complete lockdown looking at the constantly growing high numbers of Covid cases in the country. Categories like fashion & apparel, electronics, decor, and such high-end categories will witness more buying. But then India is not just like any other country where people spend with ‘no-watch’. India will surely witness the rise but then a watchful spending will be the trend to go forward.

Revenue buying is surely the next thing in India too. And this will ensure nearing silver linings for the e-Commerce companies in the days to come and even for many small and medium size manufacturers too.
