In the 2023-24 academic year, around 331,602 students entered the US universities, marking a 23 Percent increase from the previous year. However, in 2024-25, there has been a 28 percent decline in Indian student enrollment, mainly due to visa restrictions and rising tuition costs. The number of active Indian students dropped from 348,446 in July 2024 to 255,447 in August 2024, coinciding with the admission cycle. It can also be attributed to increasing racial conflicts in the US, geopolitical tensions, and a changing employment landscape in India.

Both countries share a strong bond of academic collaborations. After the latest bilateral meeting, India and the US announced
a renewed commitment to further augmenting academic collaborations, fostering innovation, and enhancing student and professional mobility. In the aftermath of this novel initiative, India has invited leading US universities to set up campuses in India, while both nations have pledged to strengthen joint research and degree programs to support the development of a globally skilled work force.

A key highlight of this renewed commitment was the launch of the INDUS Innovation Bridge. Building on the achievements of the INDUS-X initiative, this platform will accelerate investments and foster partnerships in space, energy, and emerging technologies, strengthening the leadership of both nations in global innovation. PM Modi and President Trump also reaffirmed their commitment to INDUS-X, which fosters collaboration between US and Indian defence firms, investors, and universities, with a dedicated summit planned for 2025. While the academic future looks bright for students in both countries, this special issue sheds light on the prestigious Indian-origin alumni from the US universities. Do let us know your thoughts.
