Health insurance has transitioned from a mere investment tool to becoming a critical enabler of resilience, equity, and long-term prosperity.

Increased awareness coupled with government initiatives and technological advancements, have formed the basis for how enterprises design and deliver insurance solutions today. The future of a successful health insurance industry rests on ensuring security, empathy, and empowerment across every demographic of the modern economy.

Few entrepreneurs aspire for business success beyond numbers and revenue, committed to build solutions that are inclusive and empathy-driven. A seasoned leader with deep expertise, Gagandeep Singh Marwah is one such leader who champions efficiency with compassionate care in healthcare insurance.

As COO at Health Assist Insurance TPS (formerly Safeway Insurance TPA), he plays a pivotal role in driving organizational transformation, operational efficiency, and customer-centric innovation. His professional journey reflects a rare blend of technical precision and human empathy, not just for the business to grow, but to build a nation that is healthier and informed.

Take us through the early years of your professional journey. What key lessons did you imbibe during the early days of your career?

After completing my schooling in Hyderabad, I pursued dual qualifications as I earned a Commercial Pilot License training while simultaneously completing my graduation. Managing both was a challenge but it instilled resilience and discipline in me.

With a downturn of the aviation industry in 2007-08, I shifted my focus to the family business, which specialized in hardware and school supplies, catering to B2B clients across Andhra, Telangana, and Karnataka.

With five years of industry experience, I enhanced my expertise by completing the FNFE program in Finance at IIM Bangalore. As I explored new professional challenges, an opportunity with Safeway Insurance TPA presented itself, marking the beginning of my dynamic journey in the insurance domain.

How do you maintain adherence to regulations and robust internal controls while still allowing for operational flexibility?
Navigating insurance compliance is extensive and highly structured, but diving deep into its framework brings the required clarity. At Health Assist, we rest our approach on compliance as a foundation, ensuring processes to meet regulatory standards rather than adjusting later to fit them.

Navigating the insurance landscape calls for comprehensive knowledge of operations leading to clarity of process design. Our philosophy runs on simple idea of compliance being the starting point. Aligning every process with regulations ensures our operations to be transparent, consistent, and built on a solid foundation of integrity.

Visionary leader blending business acumen with compassion driving India’s Health insurance sector

What strategies have you adopted to ensure financial transparency and account ability across departments?

Health Assist Insurance TPA began as a vision to bring medical expertise into health insurance services. When I joined the company in 2016, we only had five branches across the country, and currently we have expanded to 22 branches nationwide. The spectrum of serving a diverse client base spans corporate, banks, government entities, and retail. Over time, we have emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing TPAs.

Licensed by IRDAI, we provide comprehensive backend support to leading private and government insurers. With our expertise, we bridge the gap between insurers and clients, confirming every traction is compliant, transparent, and tailored to the needs of both sides.

How has your professional journey evolved over the years? What are your current areas of specialization?

My professional journey began at the grassroot level with a very lean structure comprising of me and one more colleague, taking charge of South India. Guided by ambition, we have lived the journey from setting up our first branch to bringing in our first business policy. From humble beginnings, I have now evolved into managing large-scale responsibility, leading operations and managing multiple zones, Corporate Business, IT processes, and ensuring business growth across India.

What insights can you share about building build strong and accountable teams in the service sector?

The service sector thrusts its core on two assets: human capital supported by robust systems. We intently invest in regular training sessions and mentoring, ensuring that the teams stay updated, confident in handling greater responsibilities.
Navigating a diverse client landscape based on expectations and scale, is challenging and requires us to deliver fairness, satisfaction, and trust across every relationship.

Moving ahead with team members who are well trained, proactive, and mentored from the ground up, we instil the values of account ability and responsibility that fosters both personal and professional growth.

How do you stay aligned with fast changing technology in your work?

Keeping pace with the technology defines my approach. Through continuous learning and global insights, we identify the right solutions for the right challenges. By anticipating future needs and integrating AI/ML strategically, we enhance efficiency and prepare our systems for a stronger, scalable future.

What future destination are you heading towards?

Given the evolving market dynamics, we witness unprecedented transformations taking place around us, and India stands at the heart of this global shift. As an organisation, we take it as an opportunity to lead and pave a path rooted in courage, foresight, and purpose. Setting new benchmarks requires us to embrace disruption and navigate by taking calculated bold steps, creating solutions that are progress and leadership driven.

From a personal standpoint, success is an outcome of consistency and requires me to outgrow my capabilities in addressing problems that impact peoples’ lives. I aspire to tackle deep-rooted challenges India faces in healthcare and insurance, arising especially from rising costs and financial accessibility. In the next five years, I wish to contribute meaningfully to serve both the industry and population at large, making quality health accessible, inclusive and a reality for the society.
