Most of the entrepreneurs use their businesses to create products and services that solve real world problems in innovative ways. Although businesses run on money,hardly a handful of entrepreneurs aim to contribute to society by leading the way and by finding innovative solutions to practical, financial and social issues. Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, founder, Tata Groups, who is regarded as the ‘Father of Indian Industries' once said, "Common people have an appetite for food, uncommon people have an appetite for service". Jamsetji dreamt of setting the first steel plant in India along with the development schemes of the country. Having the same vision in mind, Gaurav Agrawal, joined Real Ispat and Power to make a benchmark in the steel industry by contributing abundantly with his services to the development of the society and nation building at large. Gaurav is a role model for many in the steel industry. His capacity of `out of the common' thinking helps avert cultural homogeneity in the business. This has led Real Ispat and Power to move in the direction of continuous improvement. Below is an excerpt of the CEO Insights' exclusive interview with him.

Enlighten us with your professional experience and the motivation that led you to serve the steel industry.
I have been a mechanical engineer and worked in the auto mobile industry back then. Ever since, I have been fascinated with the industry that involves machines and its applications. The operations of machines have always motivated me to know more about the commer
cial and financial aspects of the business which garnered the enthusiasm in me to pursue M.Sc finance from CASS Business School in London. My return to India was a turning point for my life as well as for Real Group. The company then was at a cusp of a major acquisition of an integrated steel plant. Hence, I decided to become a part of the deal.I have seen the company's growth from early years to an established player and being an integral though involuntary part of it, inspired me to join the organization.

What is the unique proposition that helped you to become a leader in this industry?
Real group was incepted with the intention to meet the client's expectation by going an extra mile. But with ample knowledge,we were able to come through many acquisi tions. Our expertise lies in acquiring a disrupted unit and turning them around through better management, which is indeed evident from the fact that at present Real Group is operating five units out of which four were distressed acquisitions. We offer a wide range of steel products, which is one of the major factors that sets us apart from otherTMT manufacturers.

Take us through your operational strategies and your role in evicting the challenges faced by the company during the pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the instant shutting down of the steel and construction industry. However, as soon as the plants started reopening, Real Group being an operationally expert player started tapping in first mover advantage of supplying to its customer. Trust and quality of our products has always been inherent in the industry. With our advanced technological strategies in production and a customer centric app roach, we have been able to
improve efficiency even during the pan demic. We have been assigned AA+ rating from ICRA, which reflects it's healthy and improving performance in the industry. Today, we are among the best rated companies within the entire industry.

What would be your advice to the budding entrepreneurs in this domain?
Real Group's vision is to strive for excellence and to become an absolute benchmark in the steel industry for quality, service, integrity, and inno vation. We have always worked towards fostering innovation within the company. I would urge the budding entrepreneurs to work on these qualities and focus their endeavor in meeting all expectations of the customers.

Throw some light on the milestones that Real Group has achieved and the future that you foresee for the company.
Learning, innovating and leading the most talented and agile workforce on a daily basis gives me an immense sense of motivation and satisfaction. We have been able to turn around dead Steel plants in the shortest possible time, achieving maximum output and efficiency. Also, our idea of using waste dolochar as a substitute for fuel in power plants was a game changer move for our organization, which was highly appreciated and then subsequently followed by other players of the industry. We plan to continue to work towards achieving the maximum efficiency through process optimization and further expansion of our existing units.

An M.Sc in Corporate Finance from Cass business School, Gaurav actively manages the steel division of Real Group and family office by investing in financial markets, real estate and other assets.
