Geetha Narayanan

Whole-Time Director & Site Manager

In a world where science, technology and innovation are the pivots on which global challenges are addressed, the necessity to implement sustainable solutions has never been greater. It's no coincidence that modern-day visionary business leaders see the correlation of long-term success and sustainability with utmost clarity. Their experience, technical prowess, and innovative mindset are vital to that vision. An epitome of such a leadership is Bayer AG's Geetha Narayanan. Geetha is the Whole-time Director & Site Manager for the Vapi Active Ingredient (AI) Manufacturing site at Bayer Vapi Pvt. Ltd., one of the world's largest synthetic pyrethroids production facilities.

Geetha boasts a 29-year-old career spanning FMCG, F&B pharmaceuticals, and chemicals. Her FMCG, pharmaceutical and chemical industry career includes changing global specifications, starting a greenfield site, and turning around manufacturing facilities. We are delighted to engage in an exclusive conversation with Geetha, who walks us through her experience, leadership approach, and more.

After almost 30 years, what drives you today as a leader in the modern era?

What drives me as a modern-day leader is the opportunity to be closely involved in operations and to engage directly with people on the ground. I find great motivation in visiting sites, listening to operators share their ideas with pride, and witnessing their commitment to improvement and efficiency. These interactions energize me and reaffirm my passion for working in manufacturing and supply chain environments, where I can contribute to meaningful change and continuous improvement.

What steps do you take to ensure top-quality products or services?

Throughout my career with organizations known for high standards, such as Procter & Gamble and global pharmaceutical companies like GSK and now Bayer, I have worked within systems where quality is built by design, not just controlled at the end. Quality assurance is deeply embedded into every process.

As a leader, my role has been to ensure adherence to these systems by supporting the people implementing them, under standing their challenges, and
enabling solutions. I emphasize active engagement, problem solving, and consistent role modeling to reinforce that quality is a non-negotiable priority, alongside safety and compliance.

How do you foster a culture of safety and discipline within the organization?

I lead by example through consistent role modeling of safe behavior across all settings. Safety is a core value emphasized in every town hall, meeting, and toolbox talk. We ensure continuous training for all employees, including contract staff, and promote open reporting of safety incidents without fear of blame.

Recognition is given to individuals who demonstrate strong safety practices, reinforcing its importance. On the other hand, repeated unsafe behavior is addressed with firm feedback and necessary action, ensuring accountability at all levels.

Take on challenging assignments that stretch your capabilities

How do you foster a workplace environment that supports employee growth and development?

I believe in creating an empowered and inclusive work environment where individuals are encouraged to take ownership and make decisions within their areas of responsibility. This approach requires building the right skills and knowledge, and I avoid micromanagement to allow team members the space to grow.

It also enables me to identify potential talent and future leaders through ongoing assessments during meetings and one-on-one interactions. I ensure opportunities for development through challenging projects and continuous learning, especially as we adapt to evolving technologies like AI.

How do you perceive the generational shift in the workforce, especially integrating Gen Z?

While experience and wisdom are invaluable, relying solely on them can lead to stagnation. Gen Z brings fresh perspectives, creativity, and a willingness to challenge the status quo—qualities essential for adapting to evolving ways of working. Their approach may differ significantly from previous generations, but it offers valuable insights. I also see this as an opportunity for reverse mentoring, where learning flows both ways.

How do you keep yourself updated with the latest trends in the industry?

I stay updated by regularly reading industry publications, Online portal indianchemicalnews .com, compendiums published and
Chemical Weekly magazines, which provide insights into developments across the chemical and specialty chemical sectors. Coming from different industries like FMCG and pharma, it was essential for me to build domain knowledge, and consistent reading has significantly helped me understand industry trends and stay informed.

What is the future roadmap you have envisioned for yourself over the next five years?

Over the next five years, my focus will be on strengthening leadership impact rather than pursuing a specific role. I aim to ensure that the operations and supplychain under my responsibility remain competitive and forward-looking within the chemical industry. My vision includes building a culture of empowered, engaged, and happy teams, where individuals can speak freely, make decisions, and collaborate without hierarchy or fear. This will be underpinned by an uncompromising commitment to safety, ethics, and compliance.

What advice would you like to share with upcoming leaders in the industry?

Build a strong foundation in technical fundamentals, as it forms the basis of credibility early in your career. As you grow, leadership skills become more critical, but technical understanding remains essential. Always uphold safety and ethics, both are non-negotiable and can take years to build but seconds to lose. Embrace continuous learning and stay curious about developments beyond your immediate role. Take on challenging assignments that stretch your capabilities, and most importantly, be patient; growth takes time and perseverance.
