From creating India's first centrifugal pump back in 1926 to developing the country's first electric motor in 1940, the Kirloskar Group has made a meaningful impact throughout industrial India's development. In a bid to take the Kirloskar Group's legacy and heritage forward, the Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies (KIAMS) was constituted back in the year 1991. KIAMS primarily started as a management education institute for the Kirloskar Group's educational and training purposes, which was later converted into a full-time educational institute recognized by AICTE. KIAMS holds the unique distinction of being the only education institute promoted directly by an industrial house.

The PGDM program offered at the Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies prepares the students for the specific domain of production management and business analytics. Despite being a 30-yearold institute, KIAMS has a limited number of seats to offer, with the aim of creating industry-ready professionals.

The curriculum at KIAMS is heavily focused on application-based learning, with the students having to complete 9 to 10 live projects before they graduate. The Kirloskar Group's rich heritage and the subsequent stronghold of more than 15 industrial units spread throughout the country and more than 100 industrial units across the globe enable students to get practical exposure to all the facets of management. At KIAMS, instead of the typical classroom learning, a case study based or live project-based learning approach is followed. This has ultimately resulted in KIAMS garnering a strong recruiter base of 80 plus companies that visit the campus every year for recruitment.

The KIAMS campus located in Harihar, Karnataka, boasts an infrastructure second to none with a large 6-acre spread campus catering to only 240 students. The campus is filled with amenities that include a Volleyball court, a Cricket field, multiple Tennis and Badminton courts, a fully equipped modern gym, and a 24*7 Library. All these facilities provide the students with the ideal conducive environment to skill up.

"With a strong alumni network and vast recruiter base, placements have never been a problem" – Dr. Biplab Kumar Biswal

Usually, colleges would have two types of faculty, full time and the
ones posted temporarily. At KIAMS, four types of faculties are deployed. The institute has its core full-time faculty members. In addition to them, the institute has tie-ups with faculties having expertise in core industrial fields, a faculty unit of A Group employees straight from the industry, and a long list of visiting guest faculties consisting of alumni as well. With a long list of alumni that stretches back to over 25 years, the students get first hand direct exposure to the industry that allows them to build viable connections in their careers. The full strength of faculties with whom the students interact during the course reaches up to 150.

Being an institute under the Kirloskar Group, the inward process of placement is always on. Any new vacancy within the Organization is duly recruited from the existing talent pool available at KIAMS. Apart from that, more than 80 reputed Fortune and multinational companies across various sectors ranging from banks and consulting houses to analytical tool companies and security management companies compete every year to recruit the trained professionals coming out of KIAMS.

Some of the institute's top recruiters include the likes of Mindtree, PhonePe, Deloitte, HDFC Ltd, TATA Consultancy Group, among many others.

Distinctive Features at KIAMS:
• The institute has an Industry Coordinator Committee (ICC), consisting of members drawn from different companies and academics. The ICC guides changes that are necessary to make in the curriculum. Besides, the ICC is also responsible for inviting practicing managers to share experiences with the students. The ICC also ensures that regular events like seminars, workshops, and panel discussions are held to keep students abreast of the industry's latest developments.

• At KIAMS, several initiatives are put in place to ensure that well-rounded professionals emerge from the PGDM program. Student Enhancement Plan is a unique practice at the institute designed to strengthen the fundamentals needed for a manager to flourish in the corporate workplace.

• Keeping in view of the recent developments in smart manufacturing and supply chain, KIAMS has a unique industry 4.0 lab
setup. Known as SUMAN - Sustainable Universal Manufacturing Augmented Node, the industrial 4.0 lab was set up in association with the C4i4 lab, one of the four centers set up under the Samarth Udyog Initiative launched by the Department of Heavy Industries, Government of India. The lab allows students and faculty to work on live industrial projects in disruptive innovation areas and holds awareness workshops for industry professionals and faculty members.

Unique Hybrid Classes During The Covid-19 Pandemic
On the technology front, KIAMS is one of the most advanced colleges in India. Being a core engineering company, The Kirloskar Group quickly adapted to the unprecedented crisis posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. In the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, KIAMS was probably the only college to operate classes in a hybrid model. During the lockdown days, the classes undertaken at the campus were broad casted online for the students who were unable to visit the campus.

In addition to that, strict measures have been imposed for any new entrant coming in to pursue the course. The new students are required to attend classes from their hostel rooms for a minimum duration of 14 days, and only after that, he/she may join in for the offline classes. These measures have resulted in KIAMS reporting no cases of Coronavirus within the campus thus far.

The Threat Of Covid 19 Successfully Tackled At Kiams – Harihar Campus
Due to sudden lock down declared by the Govt. of India, around 100 students were struck within the campus of KIAMS at Harihar back in March 2020. It generated a panicky situation. The students at KIAMS Harihar were at the midst of writing their trimester end examination. From 1st April, 2020 onwards, the students were supposed to join Business Immersion (BI) Projects in different parts of the country with various industries.

KIAMS always considers its students as brand ambassadors as well as assets. Hence, the institute decided to hold on the students at any cost. Looking at the situation the higher management at KIAMS decided to hold all students within the campus. The local administration was informed about the stay of the students in the campus during the lockdown period. The highest order of sanitization and hygiene maintained at the campus kept the students Corona Virus free. All students as well as administrative staff were keeping a close watch on each other. The college resident doctor was doing regular checkups of all students throughout the lock down. As per the government directives all safety measures were on in full swing. These measures enabled KIAMS to respond well to the fight against the COVID – 19 Pandemic.
