Founder
Embodying this philosophy is Ravi C. Dasgupta, Founder of RCD HR Consulting, a boutique Executive Coaching and HR Consulting firm. RCD was founded in 2014 as an extension of Ravi's experience and expertise to align HR processes and business objectives, organizational development, behavioral training, and senior executive coaching.
Ravi, an alumnus of XLRI, has more than three decades of experience in human resources, leading HR efforts in several large pharma and biotech firms, implementing large-scale change projects in companies such as SmithKline Beecham, Allergan, and Biocon.
His illustrious career has left behind a trail of go-getting attitude and perseverance, including a career switch from the shop floors to Corporate HR at the age of 30. We are delighted to engage in an exclusive conversation with Ravi, who walks us through his fascinating journey, leadership approach, and future.
What were the most transformative learning experiences during your time at XLRI?
Working with peers was the most transformational learning at XLRI. Assignments required colla - boration with diverse groups, thus helping me to respect different perspectives, adapt to varied working styles, and value teamwork. Being an introvert, the small campus environment also pushed me to interact and build strong relationships.
Among faculty, Father McGrath left a lasting impact. His punctuality, discipline, and interesting delivery of Basic
Managerial Skills instilled important life lessons. These experiences collectively shaped my ability to collaborate, lead, and guide users in reallife situations.
Could you tell us more about the faculty accessi- bility at XLRI?
We had a good faculty-to-student ratio, and while professors specialized in their domains, they were accessible through both core and elective courses. I also studied finance, marketing, and economics, which broadened my perspective.
Personally, I was not the most active student in class, but I was focused on learning. I rarely missed classes, and I always worked on assignments alone rather than relying on recycled work.
This approach, combined with extensive research and self-application, allowed me to practice the principles of learning hands-on and firmly establish the foundations of knowledge.
How has the Institute helped you to further your passion in entrepreneurship?
XLRI has provided me with an entrenched ideal of working towards something that has guided me throughout my career. My real business acumen developed later at Allergan, where, as HR Head, I was part of a small leadership team engaged in critical business decisions beyond HR. That experience shaped my under standing of business, which continues to guide my corporate and consulting journey today.
How have you made use of the XLRI alumni network?
I did not actively leverage the XLRI alumni network during my college days, apart from some valuable advice from my sister and brother-in-law, who were seniors. However, after graduation, the alumni network has played a significant role in my journey.
My batch mates and I continue to share strong camaraderie, meeting regularly even today. In two of my corporate roles, my immediate boss was an XLRI alumnus, and in another instance a senior helped shortlist me for a role. In consulting, I don’t seek

Tell us about your leadership approach.
I would describe my leadership style as supportive, nurturing, and empowering. At different stages of leadership, I’ve learned the importance of letting go and allowing people to work in their own ways.
I focus on hiring smart talent, giving them responsibility and freedom, and ensuring they take ownership of their goals. My role is to guide, support, and create an environment where individuals feel trusted and motivated, which has helped me retain teams and build long-lasting professional relationships.
What roadmap have you envisioned for yourself over the next five years?
My focus is on scaling our HR consulting practice by moving beyond the boutique service model to a product-based practice. Our unique solution, ExecAlign is designed to help top leadership teams address mis -alignment and communication gaps, strengthen strategic decision-making, and build resilient leadership cultures. With AI increasingly handling routine coaching and consulting tasks, I see this as a pivotal step to create lasting impact at the leadership level with long-term growth and differentiation.
What advice would you like to pass on to the upcoming HR leaders?
I would tell upcoming leaders to run their own race and take advantage of the oppor -tunities presented to them. Some bloom early, others later, but what matters is following their passion, applying themselves fully, and continuously learning.
