India was ranked 44 out of 167 countries in the 2018 World Bank Logistics Efficiency Index (LPI). India ranked second in the Agility Emerging Markets Logistics Index 2019.

Tata Projects Ltd. is one of the pioneers and renowned companies in the construction and infrastructure industry which has been operating since 1979. The Managing Director of Tata Projects Ltd., Mr. Vinayak K. Deshpande, in an exclusive interview with CEO Insights enlightens us about the company's journey since its inception and the various services offered.

What are the key features of your company’s Infrastructure and Construction services?
Tata Projects is one of India's fastest-growing and most regarded infrastructure firms, and also has experience in developing large and complicated urban and industrial infrastructure projects. The company offers turnkey solutions for refineries, roads, bridges, integrated rail and metro networks, commercial buildings and airports, power generation, transmission and distribution systems, chemical processing plants, water and waste management systems, and mining and metal purification systems. The firm is guided by world-class management strategies to execute projects on schedule and has uncompromising protection and sustainability standards.

Elaborate on the various types of Infrastructure services that your company offers? How do you manage to keep your customer-relationships intact?
Tata Projects operates through four
Strategic Business Groups, namely, Industrial Systems, Core Infrastructure, Urban Infrastructure and Services. While the first three SDGs are directly involved in construction-related practices, the Services SBG is concerned with quality certification and inspection services. Tata Projects Industrial Systems Strategic Business Group (SBG) provides customized turnkey solutions for segments like Power and Metals, Oil and Gas and Construction and Environment. The company’s Core Infrastructure Strategic Business Group (SBG) provides on-time construction solutions for segments like Transmission and Distribution and Transportation (Railway Infrastructure, Railway Systems and Roads).

Tata Projects Urban Infrastructure Strategic Business Group (SBG) provides turnkey solutions for segments like Heavy Civil Infra (Metro and Tunnels, Hydropower and Waterways and Roads, Bridges and Ports) and Urban Built Form (Buildings, Airports and Station Modernization and Smart Cities). The Tata Projects Services Strategic Business Group (SBG) operates across the globe and offers extensive inspection, certification, repair and maintenance and training services. It also includes electricity, hydrocarbons, metals and minerals, highways, ports, and buildings in the industrial and infrastructure sectors.

Brief us on a few of your noteworthy projects along with their unique features, specifications and designs and what are the strategies/ methodologies you follow to manage multiple projects?
We do projects across the entire spectrum of the construction and infrastructure business in addition to the well-known Parliament Vista project that was recently received. For instance, a stretch of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor; multiple elevated metro rail packages and one important underground metro rail package in Mumbai; an underground stretch of Pune metro rail. Earlier, Tata
Projects completed the Lucknow Underground Metro Rail Network and the elevated metro rail stretch from Delhi-Ghaziabad. Some of the more noteworthy projects the company has executed in recent times are India’s largest blast furnace, for National Mineral Development Corporation, in Chhattisgarh; Rourkela Steel Plant’s Blast Furnace-5 ‘Durga’; Sri Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Thermal Power Station (3x800 MW) in Andhra Pradesh; and Dravyavati River Rejuvenation Project in Jaipur.

Projects in progress include a segment of India’s longest sea-bridge, Mumbai’s Trans- Harbour Link, in a joint venture with South Korea’s Daewoo EandC, redevelopment of the BDD (Bombay Development Department) chawl in south-central Mumbai, in a consortium with Mumbai’s Capacit’e Infraprojects and CITIC Group, and the Trisonic Wind Tunnel at ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Kerala, on turnkey basis and in a tie-up with Canada’s Aiolos Engineering Corporation for know-how and technology.

Give us the detail of your company's recent revenue growth and future plans.
The current order book of Tata Projects stands at around Rs.53, 194 crores as of the beginning of the current financial year. Recently, as part of the government's Central Vista redevelopment plans, the company received LoI for the prestigious project to construct India's new Parliament house.

Since July 2011, Vinayak K Deshpande has been the Managing Director of Tata Projects. A graduate in Chemical Engineering (1980) from IIT, Kharagpur, he has over 30 years of work experience in various positions, in diverse industries; beginning with the design and sales of boilers and captive power plants at Thermax, to industrial automation and process controls. In 2014-15, Tata Projects was voted by ‘Construction World’ as the ‘Most Admired Construction Firm’ under his mentorship. The company was also awarded the ‘Exemplary Project’ of the year award for the construction of Krishnapatnam (2x800 MW) Supercritical Thermal Power Plant by Dun and Bradstreet (in association with E and Y) and the ‘Outstanding Contribution in Power TandD Award’ by EPC World for the construction of Nellore Kurnool transportation.
