With an increasing number of businesses being launched each year in India, the country is buzzing with more startup enthusiasm than ever before. The Mumbai startup ecosystem is India's financial center and plays a critical role in the country's expanding startup sector. Every year, the seaside city provides $5.2 billion to India's GDP. After Bengaluru and Delhi-NCR, it has become India's third-largest startup cluster in the last decade. Mumbai boasts over 9,000 active startups and has developed into a major B2B ecosystem.

Introducing a new at-home smile makeover service concept Dr. Arpi Mehta, Dr. Pravin Shetty, Dr. Manjul Jain, and Dr. Anirudh Kale established the company toothsi in Mumbai. toothsi is a cutting-edge India's first and largest at-home smile makeover service provider using groundbreaking Clear Aligner technology to make teeth straightening simple and affordable. CEO Insights interviewed Dr. Arpi Mehta(Co-Founder & CEO), wherein he enlightened us about the inception story of toothsi and the distinguishing factors of the company.

What was the idea behind the inception of toothsi? What is it that inspired you on this entrepreneurial journey?
I discovered the necessity of invisible aligners and the need to make this product available to the Indian populace when I realized that young adults would avoid having their teeth straightened because of braces. Many people in India who require smile correction opt-out of receiving treatment, only about 10 percent of the 600 million Indians who could benefit greatly from smile correction get it. This void presented me with a business opportunity to provide Indians with invisible or clear aligners. In November 2018, we established toothsi, a smile makeover service in Mumbai. And toothsi is now available in Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Pune, among other places.

What are the challenges that you
had faced in the early years of your journey as an entrepreneur?
The initial challenge was persuading clients that a basic, transparent plastic material may be a better alternative to unpleasant, visible metal braces. We received close to 25 enquiries within the first month of our website's launch. I was continuously on the phone and on WhatsApp, introducing the product to the first wave of consumers, and I even went to their houses to do the first few scans to measure their reactions. Only until we properly conveyed our value proposition did people start to believe us. Another concern was encouraging our employees to believe in our mission of disrupting the Indian teeth straightening industry with transparent aligners. The final difficulty was convincing investors to fund the company, which we overcame by putting together a solid founding team, a solid and defend able intellectual property, and a scalable business strategy.

Transparent, tasteless, lightweight, flexible, and personalized to each customer's dental requirements, our goods are made using the best international materials

What are the unique factors about toothsi's services that separate you from your competitors?

All operations are managed in-house, from counselling and scanning to treatment planning and production. We're taking a tech-first approach right now, and we want to use our funding to improve our technology platform and deliver complete digital customer experiences. With our distinctive value offering, we're launching an entirely new category of at-home, smile makeover. This level of customization means that toothsi aligners do not obstruct tongue or jaw movement and are incredibly pleasant to wear, causing no discomfort or agony. The smile makeover starts with a no-cost, professional at-home scanning service performed by specialists, with the scan results assessed by an expert team of senior orthodontists and dentists to build a tailored smile plan for each
customer. These grin designs include a full digital depiction that shows the transformation before and after. toothsi aligners are more affordable than most teeth straightening methods currently available in India, in addition to being transparent and simple to use.

What are the latest technologies that you leverage in providing your services? How do you stay updated with the latest trends?
Everything we do is based on technology. Our emphasis on technology translates into a two-pronged approach to deployment. The first is our core technology, which has allowed us to replace traditional braces with a tech-driven solution, while also allowing us to create tailored aligners for each customer's specific orthodontic needs. The second is allied technology, which enables us to manage end-to-end processes in a customer's smile correction journey from counseling and scanning to treatment planning and post-service care totally in-house. Amalgamated tech also allows us to quickly scale-up our operations in response to rising demand while also allowing us to improve efficiencies within the company.

What is the future roadmap of toothsi? What developments can we expect in the years to come?
As we move forward in our growth story, we intend to improve our tech infrastructure in order to improve our backend and front end technology. The goal is to make our existing procedures even smoother and provide our customers with a true end-to-end digital experience. We're also devoted to strengthening our team, which has been the cornerstone of toothsi's success. We hope to execute and deliver excellent client experiences at scale by growing our team in terms of both size and skillsets. Over the following 18 months, we will be able to expand our geographical footprint to capture more of India's high-potential teeth straightening market. toothsi is now found in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Pune, among other places.
