For long, Indian leaders have had an influential presence in Saudi Arabia, particularly in sectors such as logistics, trade, and operations. Their contributions not only drive business growth but also strengthen the cultural and economic ties between India and the Kingdom. Such leaders showcase the power of resilience, adapt ability, and collaboration in a globalized world, making significant strides in shaping industries and creating lasting impacts. Turab Ur Rahaman, Director of Operations at SAB Express is one such leader whose professional journey has been nothing short of a roller-coaster ride.

Despite his academic background being unrelated to his career path, Turab’s early confidence as a public speaker led him into the sales profession. His initial success in sales set him on a path of continuous growth, and by the age of 23, he became the youngest Sales Manager in his first company. Over the years, Turab embraced challenges and took on assignments that were outside his comfort zone, learning from both successes and setbacks.

With experience across the Indian Sub continent, Middle East, and Europe, Turab has cultivated a deep understanding of cultural dynamics and the importance of building strong relationships. His love for travel has further honed his ability to work with diverse teams and navigate cross cultural challenges. His leadership and contributions to the logistics and transportation sector have earned him accolades, including the ‘Leader of the Year’ award from WCRC International. Turab credits his success to the invaluable relationships he has built throughout his journey. Let’s read on.

Can you share your leadership approach? What principles or methodo -logies guide you as a leader?
My leadership approach is rooted in being approachable and authentic. I openly acknowledge my flaws and am not afraid to admit when I fail or when I’m wrong. I take full
responsibility for any failures and own up to decisions that didn’t work out. I encourage my team to question my decisions because no one is beyond scrutiny. I also take a genuine interest in helping my team grow by offering constructive feedback and guidance on areas where they can improve. This openness and commitment to personal growth are at the core of my leadership style.

When making business decisions, it’s crucial to assess the team's capabilities, experience, productivity, and investment in both staff and resources

How have your career experiences influenced your ability to set strategic goals and make decisions related to operational activities?
For me, the foundation of strategy lies in the strength of the people and teams I lead. Managing diverse teams across cultures has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth. When making business decisions, it’s crucial to assess the team's capabilities, experience, productivity, and investment in both staff and resources.

However, their commitment to the strategy is equally important. A cohesive team is essential for success. Building and maintaining relationships across all levels of the organization has been pivotal in shaping my decisions. Effective decisions can’t be made in isolation, away from the insights of those on the ground.

How do you manage to maintain balance across different responsibilities and handle complexities effecti-vely?
Effective delegation is key to balancing multiple responsibilities. While some leaders prefer to control everything by limiting others from taking on additional tasks, holding people accountable is crucial for determining when and to whom to delegate. While not everyone may meet expectations immediately, this should not prevent leaders from offering team members new challenges.

It presents an opportunity to nurture, guide, and assign tasks they are comfortable with and passionate about. When it comes to resolving complexities and conflicts, I find it comes naturally, as I approach issues in logical, manageable steps. Discipline, continuous improvement, and a fair, impartial perspective are essential for navigating challenges and achieving winwin solutions.
Can you explain how you identify opportunities to streamline workflows, optimize processes, and enhance overall efficiency?
I prefer to understand the entire process and activity flow logically, which helps me visualize the process clearly. While I strive to stick to the fundamentals, I find that creating a process flow diagram is the most effective tool. It allows me to assess decision-making elements and identify ways to improve them. I’m also a strong advocate for the Six Sigma methodology to boost efficiency, minimize waste, and identify and resolve root causes of problems. Improving efficiency doesn’t have to be complicated. By adhering to the basics and maintaining discipline, it's often about going back to the fundamentals.

How do you ensure consistency and effectively communicate the vision across all departments?
Leadership is about guiding an organization towards a shared vision of success. No individual can achieve or lead an organization to greater heights alone. It’s essential to communicate consistently with the team and foster cross-functional coordination and synergy. Meetings should be productive and goal-oriented, focusing on actionable outcomes. Regular town hall sessions enable a two-way exchange of information with all staff, while management meetings cater to the senior leadership team, ensuring alignment and clarity at all levels.

How do you envision the long-term future of your professional journey?
I envision myself launching a business focused on a niche market within logistics, specifically in Air Cargo and Sea Cargo, in the near future. With nearly three decades of experience in the industry and a deep understanding of market dynamics across different regions, I’ve identified key opportunities and am currently working on a business plan to bring these ideas to life. These plans are close to being realized, and I’m excited to embark on this new venture. I’m eager to build the organization from the ground up, nurturing its growth and watching it thrive.
