Chief Operating Officer

In today's technology-driven business landscape, the role of a COO extends beyond operational management to driving innovation, building resilient teams, fostering customer-centricity, and enabling organizations to adapt to rapid technological change.

A successful COO combines strategic foresight with executional discipline, ensuring that business objectives are achieved while maintaining operational efficiency and longterm competitiveness.

Vijayakumar V, Chief Operating Officer of Symmetrix Computer Systems, exemplifies these qualities through a career spanning more than three decades in the IT infrastructure industry.

A science graduate with Mathematics and Statistics as his major subjects, Vijayakumar’s professional journey began in machine tool manufacturing after graduating in 1983.

However, recognizing the transformative potential of computing during the mid-1980s, he pursued a COBOL programming certi- fication with NIIT, marking the beginning of a successful transition into information technology.

He subsequently built expertise in software development, database management, and commercial applications while working with organizations such as TI Cycles, SAHA KEIL and IFB Industries.

A defining milestone came in 1996 when he joined AMP India, now TE Connectivity, where he developed deep expertise in networking, enterprise IT infrastructure, and IT operations.

His involvement in the Y2K preparedness initiative provided invaluable experience in IT asset lifecycle management, infrastructure planning, IT inventory management, and ensuring high system availability.

Since 2001, he is associated with Symmetrix working closely with organizations across manufacturing, logistics, IT, auditing, and other industries to deliver business focused infrastructure solutions.

Since leading operations at Symmetrix in 2015, Vijayakumar has championed a solution-first approach rooted in understanding customer needs, delivering unbiased technology recommendations, continuously upskilling teams, and building enduring client relationships founded on trust.

His leadership continues to strengthen Symmetrix's position as a trusted technology infrastructure partner, enabling businesses to embrace digital transformation with confidence and resilience.
As Chief Operating Officer, what has been your approach to achieving operational excellence while building long-term customer relationships and ensuring sustainable business growth in an increasingly competitive technology landscape?

Our philosophy has always been solution-first rather than product-first. Whenever customers approach us, we begin by understanding their business processes, operational challenges, and long-term objectives before recommending any technology. Sometimes, a simple process improvement combined with the right solution delivers greater value than introducing new products.

This unbiased approach has helped us build trust and retain customers for over two decades. We have always focused on steady, sustainable growth instead of short-term gains, allowing us to remain resilient through changing market conditions, including the COVID-19 period, while consistently delivering reliable service.

My approach has always been to educate customers about the implementation process explain realistic timelines and communicate trans- parently

Looking back, which achievements or leadership milestones do you believe have been most instrumental in strengthening your expertise and credibility within the IT infrastructure solutions industry?

Rather than focusing on individual achievements, I consider my greatest accomplishment to be helping organizations solve real business challenges through technology. Working with customers across manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, education, and professional services gave me valuable insight into diverse business environments.

My involvement in Y2K infrastructure initiatives strengthened my expertise in enterprise IT planning and business continuity. I have also prioritized building technically strong teams through continuous learning and OEM-led training programs. Industry recognitions from VARINDIA and Channel World reflect the consistency, quality, and customer trust we have built over the years.

Could you share one significant leadership challenge you have faced, and explain how that experience shaped your approach to decision-making, resilience, and delivering successful outcomes?

One of the most common challenges has been managing unrealistic implementation timelines. Customers sometimes expect large-scale infrastructure projects involving hundreds of systems to be completed within days, even when the site is not fully prepared. My approach has always been to educate customers about the implementation process, explain realistic timelines, and communicate transparently.
While not everyone accepts these recommendations immediately, patience and perseverance eventually build under standing. These experiences have reinforced my belief that honest communication, careful planning, and maintaining quality standards are essential for achieving sustainable project success.

How do you cultivate a culture of customer centricity, collaboration, and continuous innovation that enables the company to consistently deliver high-quality service and maintain long-term client confidence?

Customer-centricity begins with understanding every customer's unique business environment. Although the underlying technologies may be similar, each industry has different operational priorities and challenges. We therefore train our teams to first understand customer requirements before recommending any solution.

Continuous learning is equally important. Through strong partnerships with leading technology vendors our engineers regularly participate in certification programs, technical training and upskilling initiatives.

By combining technical expertise with responsiveness and a deep understanding of customer needs, we continue to build lasting relationships based on trust and consistent service excellence.

What is your long-term vision for Symmetrix, and how do you see the company strengthening its position as a trusted technology infrastructure partner in the years ahead?

Our vision is to continue growing steadily while strengthening our position as a trusted technology advisor. Artificial Intelligence will play an increasingly important role in IT infrastructure, and we have already begun preparing for that future by building strong operational data capabilities and assessing our AI readiness.

At the same time, we remain committed to continuously upskilling our teams so they can confidently address emerging techno -logies and customer challenges.

Our long-term focus is on enhancing our capabilities, sustaining customer trust, and delivering secure, intelligent, and future-ready infrastructure solutions across industries.
