Green Clearance Deferred for ArcelorMittal Nippon Plant, Andhra

The Expert Appraisal Committee under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has postponed its final determination regarding the approval of environmental clearance for the proposed 8.2 million tons per year steel plant by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Limited in Anakapalli District, Andhra Pradesh, pending the receipt of additional clarifications.
AMNSIL has engaged with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to request approval for its Rs 1.50 trillion steel plant project.
The Environmental Appraisal Committee (EAC) reviewed the proposal during its session on October 30th.

After careful consideration and examination of the information presented, the committee decided to postpone the current proposal and requested the industry sector named Ind-1 to seek clarification from the CP Division pertaining to the implementation of GSR 85E in relation to the proposal at hand, considering that the site had previously been granted an Environmental Clearance. This statement was recorded in the Minutes of the Meeting by the EAC.
The Environmental Management Plan for the proposed integrated steel plant is projected to have a total capital cost of approximately Rs 3,540 crores, with an annual recurring cost of Rs 355 crores.
During the construction phase, approximately 23,000 jobs would be created, taking into account peak demand.
Among these positions, approximately 800 would be direct roles, while the remaining 22,200 would be indirect positions.

During the operational phase, approximately 3,000 direct personnel and 4,500 indirect personnel are projected to be required for operations and maintenance. The EAC has stated that employment opportunities for local residents will be offered based on their suitability for specific job roles.
