A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by Honeywell and NTPC Green to investigate the possibility of producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in India.

The businesses will investigate producing SAF using carbon dioxide (CO2) feedstock recovered from NTPC's power facilities and green hydrogen using Honeywell's exclusive eFining technology.

“SAF production forms the sizeable part of the ambitious Green Hydrogen Hub of NTPC Green in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh. We believe that the mandate in the aviation sector for blending SAF in jet fuel will drive many early mover projects in green hydrogen,” said DMR Panda, Executive Director (Green Hydrogen), NTPC Ltd.

The partnership unites NTPC's strength in the development of green hydrogen projects with Honeywell UOP's proficiency in SAF production. SAF is regarded as an essential instrument for the aviation industry's decarbonization.

“We are excited to work with NTPC Green on this initiative to advance India’s transition towards cleaner aviation fuels and goal of working toward carbon neutrality,” says Ranjit Kulkarni, Vice President and General Manager, Energy and Sustainability Solutions, Honeywell India.

“Our collaboration with NTPC Green will leverage Honeywell’s expertise in SAF solutions to efficiently treat emissions from thermal energy, foster green hydrogen adoption, diversify feedstocks for SAF production and help India’s aviation sector meet its long-term environmental goals.”

By creating a path toward encouraging the production and sale of SAF to other regions, the study, which is anticipated to be finished by mid-2025, will help India fulfill its dual missions of establishing itself as a SAF center and reaching its emissions reduction targets.
