India Must Become Global Hub for AI: IT Secretary S Krishnan

IT Secretary S Krishnan emphasized the importance of India asserting itself as the preeminent hub for practical applications of artificial intelligence globally. This strategic positioning would enable the widespread adoption of AI technologies across various sectors and among diverse user groups.
Krishnan, speaking at a conference arranged by Nasscom, emphasized India's commitment to welcoming international AI companies while concurrently focusing on enhancing its own domestic expertise in key areas like expansive language models and data centers.

He articulated that the primary objective is to broaden the accessibility of AI resources and diminish the reliance on foreign platforms in the long run.
Krishnan indicated that the forthcoming IndiaAI Impact Summit, set to take place in New Delhi in the coming month, will emphasize the importance of international collaboration on AI policy and increasing accessibility to AI resources.
The convening of the summit will involve the participation of influential figures from around the world, government officials, and professionals from various industries.
He further mentioned that India's considerable population, flourishing startup community, and skilled technology workforce position it favorably for the development of a diverse array of artificial intelligence applications.
These practical applications, according to him, have the potential to make AI more pertinent across various demographics and industries.

Krishnan emphasized the significance of cultivating independent AI capabilities as a means of enhancing the global technological landscape. He posited that a broader distribution of advanced technology among nations would lead to a more robust ecosystem, providing countries with increased options and decreasing their dependency on a limited number of suppliers.
Krishnan underscored India's prominence in the semiconductor industry, emphasizing that a sizable segment of the worldwide chip design workforce is located in the country, with many of them operating within global capability centers. He expressed optimism that this trend will lead to the creation of Indian-owned intellectual property and the development of semiconductor products within the country.
In the morning, Sergio Gor, the US ambassador-designate to India, made an announcement regarding the invitation extended to India to join Pax Silica, an initiative led by the US that emphasizes securing supply chains for silicon, advanced manufacturing, and artificial intelligence.

The primary goal of this initiative is to enhance the resilience of technology supply chains and diminish dependence on China for essential materials and components.
