India to Sign Bilateral Investment Treaty with Uzbekistan
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will visit Uzbekistan from September 24-28 to attend the ninth annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). As the Indian Governor to AIIB, she will represent India, the second-largest shareholder in the bank, during discussions on key global development issues.
In addition to the AIIB meeting, Sitharaman will engage in bilateral talks with her counterparts from Uzbekistan, Qatar, and China, as well as with AIIB President Jin Liqun. She is also expected to meet with Uzbekistan's President, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and sign a bilateral investment treaty (BIT) between India and Uzbekistan. This treaty aims to strengthen economic cooperation and promote long-term mutual benefits for both nations.
As part of her visit, Sitharaman will participate in the India-Uzbekistan Business Forum, fostering dialogue between industry leaders from both countries. She will also visit Samarkand State University and the Lal Bahadur Shastri Monument in Tashkent and interact with the Indian diaspora in Uzbekistan.
The AIIB annual meeting will see delegations from around 80 countries and international organizations, with a focus on sustainable infrastructure development and investment aimed at fostering economic growth and improving connectivity across Asia.
