OpenAI has promoted Pragya Misra to the position of Head of Strategy & Global Affairs for India, demonstrating the company's expanding focus on one of its most vibrant markets. Misra, who became part of OpenAI's team 18 months prior to oversee Global Affairs for India, will now be responsible for implementing a comprehensive, strategic approach to India that encompasses product development, policy matters, partnerships, and ecosystem growth.

India has rapidly become a key market for the American artificial intelligence company. The country represents OpenAI's second-largest user market, with the uptake of its AI conversation tools experiencing more than triple growth compared to the previous year.

The organization has also established a local business entity and plans to inaugurate its inaugural Indian office in New Delhi before the year concludes.

This strategic decision by OpenAI demonstrates a wider adjustment in its global approach. The firm is engaging in discussions with Indian collaborators regarding AI infrastructure development as part of its worldwide "OpenAI for Countries" program, designed to integrate fundamental AI capabilities into national economies.

In June 2025, OpenAI strengthened its partnership with India's IndiaAI Mission, operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, by introducing the OpenAI Academy India. This program represents OpenAI's inaugural worldwide educational effort, providing AI competency training in both English and Hindi, with intentions to include additional regional languages. The initiative also supplies API credits valued at $100,000 for chosen Indian startups and program participants.

From a business perspective, OpenAI is customizing its offerings for India's extensive, cost-conscious consumer base. In October 2025, the company introduced ChatGPT Go, an affordable subscription service priced at Rs.399 monthly, and provided complimentary access for one year to encourage user adoption.

India presents both magnitude and intricacy—housing one of the globe's most extensive developer communities, an enormous digital consumer base, and a government committed to establishing national AI capabilities through the IndiaAI Mission.

For OpenAI, this market signifies more than just a user base opportunity but serves as a crucial examination of adaptation—spanning linguistic diversity, cost accessibility, and regulatory compliance.

Misra's broadened responsibilities indicate that OpenAI plans to advance beyond merely distributing American technology. The organization seeks to collaborate in development with India's technological environment, synchronizing with regional goals while managing a changing regulatory framework and an emerging surge of indigenous AI companies.

While OpenAI consolidates its Indian presence—establishing its headquarters, expanding the Academy, and forming alliances throughout government and business sectors—Misra's promotion positions her at the center of the company's upcoming expansion phase in one of its most vital markets.
