PM Modi Meets Tata, PSMC Leaders as Rs 91,000-Crore Chip Plant Advances
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the leadership of Tata Sons and Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) to review progress on their Rs 91,000-crore semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat.
In a post on X, PM Modi expressed his satisfaction, stating, "Had a great meeting with the leadership team of Tata Sons and PSMC. They shared updates on their semiconductor manufacturing projects. PSMC expressed enthusiasm to expand further in India".
Union Minister for Railways, Electronics, and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlighted that a detailed technology agreement has been finalized between Tata Electronics and PSMC for the semiconductor fab. "A holistic semiconductor ecosystem is taking shape", said the minister after meeting N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons.
The foundation stone for the chip plant was laid by PM Modi in March. The facility is expected to generate over 20,000 skilled jobs and will have a monthly manufacturing capacity of 50,000 wafers. Advanced factory automation, data analytics, and machine learning will enhance the fab's efficiency.
The chips produced will cater to growing markets in automotive, computing, data storage, wireless communication, and artificial intelligence. The focus will be on manufacturing chips for power management, display drivers, microcontrollers, and high-performance computing logic.
Chandrasekaran emphasized Tata Group’s tradition of pioneering industries in India, expressing confidence that the company’s entry into semiconductor fabrication will build on this legacy.
PM Modi reaffirmed that India is an ideal destination for semiconductor manufacturing, offering a robust ecosystem, ease of doing business, and a large talent pool, making it the right time for global players to invest in the country.
