RBI Governor Asks IDBRT to Focus on Digital Fraud Mitigation

The Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Sanjay Malhotra, has instructed the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDBRT) to concentrate on advancing technologies that are relevant to banking operations, with an emphasis on enhancing security and user-friendliness for customers.
He emphasized the importance of enhancing operational workflows to prioritize portability and granting users ownership of their information.

The institute in Hyderabad was founded by the RBI. During his visit to the institute's campus on Thursday, Malhotra urged employees to collaborate on creating a highly effective strategy to reduce digital fraud to uphold the public's trust in the digital banking sector.
He highlighted the significant need for preparing bankers with IT skills, enabling them to effectively operate in a digital work setting. According to a statement from IDRBT citing the RBI Governor, there is a necessity to enhance training efforts through various delivery modes such as on-campus and online to address these requirements.
He stressed the importance of the institute strategizing for scalability and impact to meet the evolving technology landscape and changing requirements of the banking sector.
Online financial fraud is a significant concern for a vast number of individuals in India. Various fraudulent activities such as phishing, scam investment schemes, OTP scams, and online arrests have resulted in a growing number of individuals experiencing monetary losses through online platforms.

The widespread use of the internet in households has made digital transactions a common practice, but has also made individuals more vulnerable to potential threats. In this context, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India emphasized the measures being taken by the central bank to safeguard citizens and prevent the disappearance of stolen funds.
Describing digital fraud as a significant and pertinent concern, the governor stated that the RBI, along with various other entities such as banks, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and law enforcement agencies, are diligently working towards thwarting such fraudulent activities and enhancing the retrieval of embezzled funds.
This issue is of great significance and importance, and the RBI is diligently working to prevent occurrences of such fraudulent activities. Banks, as well as law enforcement agencies and the Ministry of Home Affairs, have implemented a number of measures in response. Malhotra also stated that efforts are being made to raise awareness about digital fraud among the public.

Malhotra underscored the significant attention being given to the issue by various stakeholders, including the RBI, judicial bodies, law enforcement, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and others. He highlighted that collective efforts are being made to address and decrease instances of such cases, while also focusing on establishing a framework for the retrieval of stolen funds. In recent legal rulings, new perspectives have been introduced into the discussion. One notable decision by the Bombay High Court determined that investigative agencies are prohibited from placing a total freeze on a bank account alleged to have received illicit funds. Rather, they are authorized to only restrict access to the specific contested sum of money.
