Through a competitive bidding procedure conducted by state-run SJVN, Reliance NU Energies, a subsidiary of Reliance Power Ltd, has won a 350 MW solar power project integrated with a 175 MW/700 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

According to Reliance Power, once the project is up and running, it will expand its portfolio by 600 MWp of solar PV capacity and 700 MWh of storage, bringing its total clean energy pipeline to 2.5 GWp of solar and more than 2.5 GWh of BESS.

The winning pricing, which was fixed for 25 years, was set at Rs.3.33 per kWh. SJVN has yet to provide Reliance NU Energies with the letter of award (LoA).

The project is included in a larger 600 MW/2,400 MWh BESS ISTS-connected and 1,200 MW solar tender that was put out by SJVN, a Navratna public sector undertaking (PSU).

Strong interest in dispatchable renewable energy solutions was demonstrated by the 19 bidders that qualified for the e-reverse auction out of the more than four times oversubscribed tender.

To guarantee dependable peak power delivery to state discoms, the awarded project requires a minimum four-hour daily discharge window.

It will be built using the build-own-operate (BOO) paradigm, in which the facility is owned and run independently by the developer.

Separately, the Solar Energy Corp. of India (SECI) and Reliance NU Suntech Private Ltd, another Reliance Power subsidiary, inked a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to build the biggest combined solar and BESS project in Asia.

Up to Rs.10,000 crore would be needed for the project, which will combine 465 MW/1,860 MWh of BESS with 930 MW of solar power.
