OpenAI has created IndQA, a fresh benchmark aimed at assessing the ability of AI models to comprehend and analyze questions relevant to Indian languages and cultural backgrounds.

The organization stated that this project aligns with its goal to guarantee that artificial general intelligence (AGI) positively impacts all people, emphasizing that for AI to be truly beneficial, it needs to function efficiently across various languages and cultures.

OpenAI pointed out that despite the fact that English is not the primary language for about 80 percent of the global population, the current benchmarks for assessing non-English proficiency are still lacking. The company believes that popular multilingual benchmarks like MMMLU have become saturated as top models are all achieving similar high scores, which limits their effectiveness in assessing actual progress.

Additionally, current benchmarks mainly concentrate on translation or multiple-choice tasks and do not emphasize understanding context, culture, and history, which are crucial for evaluating how well an AI system understands the lived experiences of people in various regions. Due to its linguistic diversity and expanding user base, India was selected as the launch location for the project.
