Many inspirational business leaders from a plethora of industries, including media tycoons, entrepreneurs, financiers, and philanthropists, have left the world in 2024. The impact of leadership loss is huge, as these famous leaders' legacies changed economies, cultures, and industries. Their inspirational leadership will continue to resonate with people from their respective fields. Their passing signifies the end of an era, but the legacy of great leaders will continue to serve as a north star to those who need them.

Ratan Tata

He is one of India's most powerful business magnates, but most of all, he is one of the most beloved leaders among citizens. He has committed his entire life to his ventures that serve society in each of its own unique ways. Years of leading various businesses under his empire have cemented his unmatched legacy that inspires generations and still continues to impact industries. He is the captain who accelerated The Tata Group’s expansion rapidly with important acquisitions like Tetley, Corus, and Jaguar Land Rover. He helped the conglomerate reach new heights and solidified its position as a major game-changer in the world economy.

Aside from his business triumphs, Ratan Tata fostered India's startup scene. He is known to have supported more than 40 startups across diverse industries and became an early backer and investor in well-known businesses, including Paytm, Snapdeal, Ola, and Urban Company.

Raghunandan Srinivas Kamath

The creator of Naturals Ice Cream, is fondly called as “Ice Cream Man of India”. The company shared the news with a heartfelt post on X, saying, "A smile that will never be forgotten. A smile that will keep inspiring us that his era will never end. To the Ice Cream Man of India, who will forever stay in our hearts and yours.”

Hailing from the little village of Mulki in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, Kamath started his career by helping his father in the fruit business. He was only 14 when he started his first business career at the age of 14 and relocated to Mumbai to work at his brother's restaurant.

He is a pioneer who set the starting point for the ice cream industry in 1984, with just four workers and twelve flavors.

He turned Naturals Ice Cream into a widely popular and favorite brand among citizens. He led the company’s expansion with over 165 locations in 15 states and a turnover of almost Rs 300 crore via perseverance, hard work, and an uncompromising dedication to quality.

Shashikant Ruia

Shashikant Ruia, a co-founder of the Essar Group, is famously known in the corporate field as the Ruia brothers, who, along with his brother Ravi Ruia established the Essar Group in 1969. He first led the company into taking on infrastructure projects and later grew its portfolio to steel, energy, and telecoms, and eventually turned it into one of the biggest corporations in India.

The leader has equally contributed to his charitable endeavors in the fields of health, education, livelihood, sports, and community welfare through the Essar Foundation. Under his leadership, self-help groups like Lok Vikas Kendra were formed in remote areas close to Essar's plant locations in Hazira, Jamnagar, and Bailadila, which remains helpful to many people in securing a living. On the healthcare side, he brainstormed and made mobile medical vans and health camps in, again, remote areas and constructed treatment facilities and infrastructure at hospitals like Surat Hospital and Breach Candy Hospital. By establishing facilities, he also encouraged sports among young people in these villages.

Cherukuri Ramoji Rao

This visionary tycoon’s legacy continues to influence the media and entertainment industry. Across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and beyond, his business endeavors—from the first Eenadu newspaper to the ground-breaking ETV Network, Ramoji Film City, Dolphin Hotels, Margadarsi Chit Fund, Ushakiran Movies, and Priya Foods—not only revolutionized industries but also gave countless people jobs.

He had a significant influence on the media landscape. 'Annadata,' a journal for farmers, was his first publication in 1969. In 1974, he started the Eenadu daily. By introducing color printing, district editions, and local tabloids, he also altered the newspaper industry and won over Telugu readers throughout Andhra Pradesh. Under his direction, Ramoji Film City developed into a center for Indian cinema, showing a number of classic films like "Leo" and "Ponniyin Selvan." Over 50 films were created by Rao's production company, Usha Kiran Movies, and the ETV network grew to accommodate viewers in other languages.

Ananda Krishnan

Malaysian billionaire whose enormous company empire made significant breakthroughs in many fields, including telecommunications, real estate development, and oil and gas. Over his career, the business tycoon’s businesses across industries influenced Malaysia's business environment. Widely known as ‘AK,’ he was the third richest individual in Malaysia, according to the South China Morning Post, with a fortune of more than $5 billion (more than Rs 40,000 crore). He used to own Aircel, a company that supported the Chennai Super Kings of the Indian Premier League. Throughout Malaysia, his companies—TGV Cinemas, Maxis Bhd, Astro Holdings, Bumi Armada, Measat Satellite Systems, and Tanjong Plc—have gained widespread recognition.

In the early 1990s, he convinced then-Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad to undertake the construction of the famous Petronas Twin Towers. He used the media to advance charity causes and was instrumental in international programs like Live Aid. Throughout his life, he consistently supported charitable and educational initiatives. Although the tycoon avoided the limelight, he gained international recognition in the mid-1980s when he contributed to funding the rock sensation Bob Geldof's Live Aid event.
