The World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES 2025) inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, witnessed an overwhelming reaction from exhibitors, industry leaders, startups, policymakers, academics, and the general public. The event has emerged as an important convening point for the media and entertainment industry, with participation from all walks of the industry, from distinguished artists and world-renowned content creators to technology innovators and business leaders.

In his inaugural address, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that WAVES is more than just an acronym; it embodies a wave of culture, creativity, and worldwide connectivity.  He emphasized that India is evolving into a global hub for film production, digital content, gaming, fashion, music, and live entertainment. He motivated creators around the world to reach for new heights and share their stories; encouraged investors to support not only platforms but also the individuals behind them; and urged India’s youth to convey their myriad untold stories to a global audience. By demonstrating WAVES as the start of India’s Orange Economy, he motivated the younger generation to lead this creative revolution and establish India as a center for global creativity.

Impactful Knowledge Sessions

The panel discussion commenced with over 50 keynote addresses from prominent individuals, including Mukesh Ambani, Ted Sarandos, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Neal Mohan, Shantanu Narayen, Mark Read, Adam Mosseri, and Nita Ambani. Their insights shed light on the evolving entertainment landscape, advertising industry, and digital innovations. Celebrated actors such as Chiranjeevi, Mohanlal, Hema Malini, Akshay Kumar, Nagarjuna, Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Allu Arjun, and Shekhar Kapur, many of whom were part of the WAVES Advisory Board, engaged in lively discussions about the future of film and content production in the age of virtual filmmaking and artificial intelligence.

WAVES 2025 included 40 masterclasses designed to encourage practical learning and creative exploration. Participants gained firsthand experience with industry techniques through workshops such as The Art of Acting, led by Aamir Khan, Craft of Direction by Farhan Akhtar, and Insights into Filmmaking by Michael Lehmann. Additional sessions explored behind-the-scenes narratives, including the making of Panchayat for Amazon Prime, the creation of AR lenses, the development of AI avatars, and game design using generative AI. These workshops provided industry experts and aspiring creators with essential knowledge and resources to thrive in the swiftly evolving creative economy.

WAVES also organized 55 breakout sessions, which served as a platform for in-depth discussions on specialized subjects such as broadcasting, digital media, OTT, AI, music, news, live events, animation, gaming, virtual production, comics, and filmmaking. These interactive sessions brought together senior professionals from leading companies like Meta, Google, Amazon, X, Snap, Spotify, DNEG, Netflix, and NVIDIA, along with representatives from industry associations like FICCI, CII, and IMI. Focused on promoting sector-specific knowledge and collaboration, the conversations addressed key challenges and explored new avenues for growth and innovation.

Fostering Global Peace and Unity

Dr. S. Jaishankar, the Union External Affairs Minister, emphasized the necessity for collaboration between technology and tradition, advocating for youth empowerment through skill enhancement and innovative practices. Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, pointed out the transformative effects of technology on content creation and the essential nature of promoting local content, establishing co-production agreements, and creating joint funding initiatives.

India’s ‘Create in India’ challenges, which have successfully recognized over 700 global creators, were highlighted, with aspirations to expand these initiatives to encompass 25 languages in the next edition. This summit established a strong groundwork for future international collaboration in media and entertainment, focusing on creative excellence and the ethical production of content.

WAVEX: An Accelerator for Aspiring Start-ups in M&E Sector

WAVES Start-Up Accelerator chose 30 Media & Entertainment Start-Ups to present their innovative concepts directly to a panel of prominent investors such as Lumikai, Jio, CABIL, and WarmUp Ventures, among the 45 notable angel investors involved. With more than 1000 sign-ups, the initiative sparked investment conversations estimated at Rs. 50 crore that are currently in the works. Additionally, over 100 Start-Ups showcased their concepts and products to prospective investors in a dedicated Start-Up pavilion.

WAVEX aims to cultivate a vibrant investment ecosystem for start-ups to flourish and expand by establishing an angel investor network focused specifically on the Media and Entertainment industry.

To better support these creators, WAVEX plans to develop a network of incubators with dedicated mentors for guidance and investors for initial funding. WAVEX stands out as it supports ideas that may not yet have a physical product but demonstrate strong potential.
