A Strained Diplomatic Relationship

India and Canada are going through a tough phase of diplomatic relationship to the tune of both countries expelling their top envoys along with other diplomats. Many believe the spat between the two countries started when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited India to attend the G20 Summit last year. During his one-on-one with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he was put to the shredder by the Indian PM by publicly raising strong concerns about the continuous ‘anti-India activities’ by Khalistani extremist elements in Canada. Modi went on to state the importance of cooperation between the two
countries in dealing with such threats. The Canadian PM is never a favorite figure in India, especially because of his history of close relationships with anti-India forces in the country.

However, the worsening diplomacy between the two strong nations is at least not creating any immediate impact on the trade relationship. India and Canada’s trade volume reached $9.36 billion in 2023, and it has maintained a similar pace this year, with the volume amounting to $3.11 billion by April. India exported goods worth $1.90 billion, while imports were valued at $1.21 billion. India majorly imports minerals, pulses, potash, industrial chemicals and gemstones and exports goods such as pharma- ceuticals, marine products, electrical and electronic equipment, pearls and precious stones. This is extremely good news for Indian entrepreneurs in Canada. In this special issue of CEO Insights, we shed light on some of the stellar Indian entrepreneurs in Canada.
