All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) sets the benchmark of high standard medical education in India, and the institution has built an excellent reputation over the decades by doing exactly that. The professional ethics and standards the alumni adhere to are of the highest order. One of the incidents recently has proven it again. The AIIMS team took a strong stand against terminating a 26-week old pregnancy. The team at AIIMS
advised that a pre-term and very low birth weight baby will need a long time in intensive care, with a high chance of having immediate and long-term problems in physical and mental health that will affect the quality of the child's life. But the pregnant woman took the matter to court.

The court ruled in favor of the woman, allowing her to terminate the pregnancy. But the doctors of AIIMS didn’t budge. The doctors tasked with carrying out the procedure for termination of pregnancy wrote back to the additional solicitor general of India, Aishwarya Bhati, requesting a clarification from the court. Later, the court withdrew its permission to abort after Bhati, appearing for the Centre, told the court that the permission contradicted the medical report of the pregnant woman. The court has now asked the specialists from AIIMS to conduct a medical examination and submit a report. However, the AIIMS doctors are quite clear on their stand: the fetus has a viable chance of being born, and they would have to conduct a foeticide. Kudos to them. This special issue is dedicated to the prestigious worldwide alumni of AIIMS.
