imageIndia, as a country, is well known for producing global leaders. From Sundar Pichai to Satya Nadella, the list is endless. It is important to note that many of them had humble beginnings in the technology industry. Through an exclusive interview with Saurabh Saxena, Intuit India Site Leader and Senior Vice President of Go-To-Market Technology, we are endeavoring to decipher the challenges of global technology leadership and what it takes to be a global tech leader. Below is an excerpt from the interview.

Could you share insights into your transition from being a software engineer to taking on a global leadership role?

Having grown from a staff software engineer to my current role as Intuit India Site Leader and Senior Vice President of Go-To-Market Technology, I've been privileged to witness and contribute to Intuit's remarkable growth. Over the past 16 years, I've led impactful projects, including scaling our engineering teams in Intuit India, leading QuickBooks Product & Platform capabilities and launching the QB Advanced product focused on solving the needs of QuickBooks Mid-Market customers. These experiences, fostered by Intuit's culture of nurturing talent, prepared me for the challenge of overseeing our India site, now the company's second-largest tech and innovation hub. In my current role, I'm focused on leading go-to-market tech and accelerating our strategic growth through bold leadership. This journey has been one of continuous learning, adaptation, and pushing boundaries. I'm incredibly proud of what we've achieved and excited for the future.

What specific skills do you believe are crucial for individuals to thrive in a workforce increasingly driven by AI technologies?

As the workforce becomes increasingly driven by AI technologies, individuals must cultivate a diverse set of skills to complement and work alongside these advanced systems. Analytical and critical thinking abilities will be paramount, enabling humans to tackle complex problems, critically evaluate information, and devise innovative solutions that AI cannot provide on its own.

Thriving in an AI-driven workforce requires a combination of strong technical proficiency in areas like data science, machine learning, cloud computing, and programming languages, along with a continuous learning mindset fueled by self-learning platforms, workshops, and academic partnerships. Equally important are innovation and problem-solving abilities fostered through design thinking to develop creative solutions for global and local challenges. Intuit values end-to-end product development skills, collaboration through open platforms and communities, and leadership qualities that enable influence and career growth. This holistic skill set, spanning technical expertise, continuous upskilling, innovation, teamwork, and leadership, prepares individuals for success in the workforce.

What would be your advice to the individuals aiming to set benchmarks in their career in this industry?

Career growth is all about taking on uncharted territories, stretch assignments, taking risks, and working with different people – collaboration is key. Also, It’s important to be very intentional about your own career growth. Lead with a clear vision, be curious and have room for agility and change. Continuously upskill and embrace a growth mindset. Employers value tech talent who stay updated on the latest software and industry standards through skill development programs, relevant articles, videos, and podcasts. Equally important are soft skills like communication, a passion for learning, and a "fail fast" mindset. In addition to technical expertise, individuals should focus on developing strong analytical, critical thinking, innovation, and problem-solving abilities. By cultivating this holistic skill set, aspiring software developers can position themselves for a successful and impactful career.

Elaborate on the specific experiences or critical moments in your career journey that have shaped your leadership style and approach.

Throughout my career, my leaders have played a pivotal role in my development. They've consistently encouraged me to think bigger, instilled confidence, invested in my growth, and provided invaluable support during challenging times.  Sometimes, all we need is someone to believe in us, even when we don't believe in ourselves. I am fortunate to have many such mentors around me who provided that support.

Looking back, that moment of encouragement was a turning point for me. It taught me the importance of taking risks, trusting in my own abilities, and pushing the boundaries of what I thought was possible. I believe that the foundation of being a good leader is to live by core values, including respect, authenticity, kindness, and vulnerability. It is essential to show vulnerability and embrace imperfections as a leader. I value trust and the ability to influence others in a leadership role and appreciate traits such as ownership, accountability, and a growth mindset in my teams.

An empathetic leader acknowledges emotions and recognizes that personal and professional lives are intertwined

What does technology leadership mean in the technology era? What have been the new traits required to excel as a tech leader?

In the current landscape, technology leadership demands a paradigm shift. It requires fostering a culture of continuous learning, risk-taking, and customer-obsession. Effective tech leaders must empower their teams to push boundaries, experiment fearlessly, and create transformative solutions that genuinely enrich customers' lives. As Intuit's philosophy states -  "fall in love with the customer's problems, not the solutions." This mindset promotes innovation by aligning teams to deeply understand pain points rather than get attached to predetermined solutions. Implementing core principles like Customer-Driven Innovation (CDI) and Design for Delight (D4D) becomes critical.

A tech leader must have a clear understanding of the technology trends and developments in the industry to make informed decisions that benefit the organization. Then there's the need to be versatile, flexible, adaptable and catalysts of change, embracing disruptive technologies like AI/ML ahead of the curve.

Tech leaders today must drive the spirit of collaboration, inclusion and knowledge-sharing, creating psychologically safe environments, encouraging diverse perspectives, and promoting cross-pollination of ideas to cultivate a vibrant and innovation ecosystem.

Emotional intelligence is becoming an increasingly critical competency across the entire workforce. How should a leader empathize with teammates' challenges and get individual contributors to deliver the best possible results?

It's crucial for leaders to empathize with their team members to create a positive work environment that fosters productivity and success and, thus, focus on prioritizing emotional intelligence. This begins with active listening - being fully present, suspending judgment, and seeking to deeply understand each individual's unique circumstances, motivations, and roadblocks. Frequent check-ins, both one-on-one and team-wide, provide a psychologically safe space for open dialogue.

An empathetic leader acknowledges emotions and recognizes that personal and professional lives are intertwined. Being supportive and leading by example ensures that team members feel valued and heard. Offering flexible arrangements and mental health resources and celebrating holistic well-being demonstrates genuine care. Customized coaching, learning opportunities aligned with aspirations, and public recognition of efforts cultivate an environment of trust and motivation.

According to you, what should a leader do to analyze market trends, assess competitive landscapes, and anticipate future challenges?

In today's rapidly changing world, leaders must be proactive and strategic in analyzing market trends, assessing competitive landscapes, and anticipating future challenges. Developing a strong network of industry experts, thought leaders and influencers can provide valuable insights and keep you attuned to new developments and emerging challenges. Encourage your teams to think creatively and explore innovative solutions that can strengthen your competitive position and drive growth. Consistently evaluate your product offerings and services to identify areas for improvement and ensure you remain relevant in the evolving market. Stay up-to-date on industry trends and market dynamics by analyzing competitor strategies, identifying emerging opportunities, and monitoring potential threats and disruptions. In today's fast-paced business environment, the ability to pivot quickly and adapt to changing dynamics is crucial. Invest in a flexible infrastructure that allows you to adapt to shifting market conditions and seize emerging opportunities. Leveraging technology is key to staying agile, allowing you to stay on top of market trends, uncover insights, and make informed decisions.
