Plant Heads: Building India While Safeguarding Floors & Mastering Efficiency

Separator

Manufacturing is the backbone that supports the Indian economy. One of the key burgeoning sectors, manufacturing alone contributes almost 16–17% of the country’s GDP. The sector is also one of the largest employers, providing work opportunities to more than 27 million people.

The sector is currently undergoing a gradual yet steady transformation, driven by both policy initiatives and industrial aspirations. PM Modi’s focus on strengthening India’s manufacturing capabilities has resulted in the immense popularity of the “Make in India” initiative and Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes.

Be it electronics, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, or chemicals, India is registering strong growth in its manufacturing capabilities.

A closer look at the manufacturing sector takes us into brightly lit shop floors where hardworking factory workers operate with precision and vigour. Amid heavy machinery, loud noises, and extreme temperatures, it almost resembles structured chaos.

The controller orchestrating this controlled chaos is the plant head, a role that sits at the intersection of production, quality, maintenance, and safety, all while working towards broader organizational objectives. The current edition of CEOInsights India magazine highlights the work of a few experienced and accomplished plant heads from across India.

Gracing the cover is Jai Prakash Chaurasia, Plant Head, Atul Auto. A manufacturing operations leader with over 30 years of experience, he leads multi-plant operations, driving PQCDSM excellence, lean manufacturing, TPM implementation, and sustainable growth while optimizing productivity, cost, and long-term strategic alignment.

Another seasoned operations leader featured in this edition is an IIM alumnus with global exposure, Swapnil Vyas, AVP – Operations and Unit Head at BKT Tires (Aurangabad, MH). He is recognized for driving operational excellence and innovative quality leadership.

Joining the list is Kamal Singh Thakur, a seasoned Plant Head with over 25 years of experience in the power transformer industry. Specializing in manufacturing up to 765 kV and 500 MVA systems, he is known for driving operational excellence, scaling production capacity, and implementing zero-defect practices.

Read in-depth interviews with the aforementioned plant heads and hear their perspectives on efficiency, safety, quality, and more.
