Dr. (HC) Yusuf Abbas Poonawala
Managing Director
For Yusuf Poonawala, Managing Director of Woodpecker Packaging LLC, these demands have shaped both a business and a leadership philosophy. Established in 2011 in response to the UAE’s expanding supply chain requirements, Woodpecker has developed into a specialized packaging provider serving marine, oilfield, pharmaceutical, container-handling and port-handling sectors. Its progress reflects Poonawala’s willingness to learn, work through uncertainty and build capabilities alongside an experienced core team
From beginning his career in human resources to establishing a business in a new country, Poonawala has combined entrepreneurial determination with a practical approach to improvement. In this interaction with CEO Insights, he discusses the experiences behind Woodpecker’s growth, the relationship between craftsmanship and technology, and his priorities for the company’s future.
CEO Insights engaged in a one on one interaction with Yusuf Poonawala, let’s hear from him.
Could you briefly share your professional journey and the experiences that shaped your leadership at Woodpecker Packaging?
Born and raised in Pune, India, I completed a bachelor’s degree in Commerce and a master’s degree in Human Resources. I was also awarded a doctorate in Business Innovations and Entrepreneurship. My professional journey began as an HR manager at a knowledge process outsourcing company before I moved to the UAE.
That transition opened opportunities in logistics, particularly specialized packaging services for the marine and oilfield sectors. Through hands-on experience and a willingness to explore unfamiliar areas, I developed the knowledge needed to establish myself in this field. The region’s growing supply chain requirements provided the foundation for launching Woodpecker in 2011.
Over the years, I have added credentials in dangerous goods handling, skidding, heavy-lift operations and pharmaceutical packaging, among other areas.
These qualifications have strengthened my understanding of different cargo requirements. However, customer appreciation certificates and awards remain especially meaningful to me because they reflect the confidence customers place in our work.
How is Woodpecker adapting to technology, sustainability and changing customer require-ments?
Technology has significantly improved our processes, but customized cargo securing and protection still require considerable practical expertise. Each project brings different dimensions, handling conditions and protection requirements. Our approach therefore combines manual skills with appropriate tools and machinery.
We begin by understanding the customer’s requirements in detail, then identify how technology can simplify execution, reduce lead times and help us meet specifications. The objective is to select tools that make a measurable contribution to the assignment while retaining the judgment that custo-mized work demands.
Sustainability is another important consideration. We regularly assess waste, workplace hazards, environmental impact and opportunities to reduce packaging space. We also explore alternatives that can improve shelf life and reduce storage requirements.
As manufacturers of wooden boxes and pallets, we look for opportunities to reuse compressed wood and convert damaged pallets into other products. These practices help reduce waste while creating opportunities to make better use of available materials.
How do you build a culture of teamwork and continuous improvement?
I believe personal improvement is the starting point for helping others grow. I maintain a daily checklist to monitor planned tasks, review progress and identify where corrective action is needed. This discipline helps me establish a consistent working rhythm and reinforces the standards I expect across the organization.
At Woodpecker, we encourage employees to contribute ideas, question established methods and identify opportunities to improve our products, processes and customer experience. People working directly on an assignment often understand its practical challenges best, so their observations are valuable to our improvement efforts.
Open communication and collaboration across functions help turn these ideas into action. My responsibility is to create an environment where employees feel comfortable contributing and understand how their work supports the company’s objectives. When people feel valued and take ownership of their responsibilities, teamwork becomes a stronger foundation for progress.

What challenges have shaped your leadership approach?
Establishing a business in a new country without financial backing was one of my greatest challenges. Family support helped me take the first steps and the responsibility of repaying that support gave me a strong incentive to achieve my targets earlier than anticipated.
Language and regulatory requirements presented additional difficulties, particularly when government procedures and legal formalities were conducted in Arabic.
Working through these challenges taught me patience, adapt ability and the importance of understanding the environment in which a business operates.
Setbacks also taught me to acknowledge mistakes, accept losses and apply those lessons to future decisions. As Woodpecker developed our emphasis on structured processes led to ISO certification, which we have maintained without nonconfor -mities in our processes and documen -tation. Above all these experiences strengthened my resilience.
What are your priorities for the future?
Our priorities are sustainable growth, innovation and customer excellence. We intend to strengthen Woodpecker’s position as a trusted packaging solutions provider by delivering high-quality, environ -mentally responsible products that respond to evolving requirements across industries.
Sustainability will remain central to our strategy, alongside improvements in how we design and execute packaging solutions.
What does being recognized as a CEO Insights 'Annual Leader 2026' mean to you?
It is both an honor and a humbling experience. I see it as a reflection of the Woodpecker team’s dedication, our customers’ trust and the partnerships we have built over the years.
We are grateful to CEO Insights for this recognition. It encourages us to continue improving and pursue further achievements together.
