Scaling the skies and setting the mark very high, the Aviation industry in the country knows one name that holds an unmatched reputation and goodwill - H K Vithalani, who helms Global Aviation Services. A celebrated company that has stood the test of time over the last five decades, establishing itself as a prominent player in the Indian aviation & logistics industry since 1975. His illustrious journey is nothing short of remarkable and today in our CEO interactions, we seek to understand a little more behind his unwavering pursuit of excellence and share his thoughts on the evolving demands of the industry, and words of advice to new comers.

Could you give a brief account of your professional background & experiences? What is the motivation that fuels your daily routines?
I started my career at 18! I began working for a jewellery store in Kalbadevi, learning the ropes of how a business functions very early in life. I started my own costume jewelry business from a tiny room where I was the designer, production manager, export head, and everything else in between. These years are what helped me understand that no task is small or big, and every individual is important to build a business. At the time, I was one of the largest exporters of costume jewellery in the country with international clientele such as Harrods & Macy's. As an exporter, I was already shipping large volumes of jewellery around the world. And one day in 1975 I was offered the Cargo GSSA for Kuwait Airways in Bangalore in 1975. From being a customer, I became a partner for the airlines I had worked with for so long! I understood the touchpoints and expectations of the industry well and that knowledge translated into a newfound enthusiasm for establishing another business and taking a leap into the aviation industry. The first office of The Global Group was at Devatha Plaza on Residency Road and today the Group enjoys an international reputation and dominates the air cargo industry in India.

My daily routine has always been about creating a balance in all aspects of life. From being mindful at work to being at ease at home, it is all about being fully immersed in everything that I do. The pursuit of excellence brings me joy and I strive to feel it every day. At the end of the day, if you look back and answer one question: did you do your best? And if the answer is yes, then you know that you’re on the right path. This ‘yes’ is what motivates me every day.

You possess about five decades of experience. How has been your path to success and what is your success mantra?
You say five decades, but I would call it my entire life! The experience is not just of putting in hours at work, but also creating a foundation that others can get inspired by and be proud to be a part of. It is to take a step back, envision the larger picture, and bring in people to see it and work towards it with you. The journey has been extraordinary. Every moment has instilled in me, the belief that everything happens for a reason, both the good and the challenging. The path to success is made up of successful days even in times of crisis. The idea is to look at everything and respond with objectivity, a solution mindset, and look at challenges as opportunities
to excel.

My success mantra is simple: A task can be tough, but never impossible!

Tell us about your leadership approach. What are the guidelines or methodologies you follow to lead
your team?

The leadership approach that works best in my mind is participatory in nature, where one is able to foster ownership, motivate the team to think creatively, create a professional environment where everyone is fearless in seeking advice, churn solutions, and maintain a stable work life balance. In truth, my team is my wealth. We encourage our leaders to take ownership of the business and run it like an enterprise. The company’s culture is rooted in creating a space that feels like family, and this is reflected in so many members staying with the Group for over 25 years. I have always guided the Global Aviation family by setting examples. From making sure that I build and nurture relationships for the long term, fulfill commitments, create a brand synonymous with quality & respect, and establish an ethical approach to work. The idea behind good leadership is to create more leaders who can walk the path, groom others, and take the team forward.

What is the future of the industry and how does Global Aviation Services plan to meet the changing demands of it?
Since my entry into aviation in 1975, the business processes have become more efficient only by digitalization and advanced digital platforms. Be it sales techniques and mapping, operations, warehousing, airside ramp, data logging, reporting etc.

The industry is already on the verge of a major hightech boom, with artificial intelligence, robotics, electric powered equipment, biometrics, and alternative fuel coming to the fore quite rapidly. The key to meeting this is simple: sustain ability.

To innovate systems, bring in technology partners that help us upgrade & upskill and understand the scope overall. This in turn keeps us well-equipped to maintain the current state of work as well as the new demands that may come our way.

In light of your strong experience within the industry, what advice would you give to budding industry leaders?
Follow your passion!Passion and creativity are as important as skill and knowledge. It is important to ride the wave with confidence. take smart risks and embrace challenges, which are part of the game when you delve into business.

Collaboration is key to building success, and taking people along on your journey is imperative. Each experience has a learning folded into it, so seek that and move forward!
