Some entrepreneurs enter established categories; others recognise when a category itself needs to be reimagined. Megha Saraff’s journey began with a simple but sharp observation: while interest in greener and more sustainable living was growing, East India’s horticulture industry remained fragmented, with inconsistencies in plant quality, pricing, design and reliable after-sales guidance.

She saw an opportunity not merely to sell plants, but to make green living more organised, accessible and aspirational. This insight laid the foundation for Daali, a green lifestyle brand that brings together plants, design-led planters, care guidance, gifting and greening solutions within one integrated ecosystem.

Rooted in Jhumri Telaiya, Jharkhand, Megha’s perspective was shaped across distinctly different environments. Encouraged by her parents to step beyond familiar surroundings, she studied at Good Shepherd International School, Ooty, where exposure to diverse cultures broadened her worldview at an early age. She later completed the IBDP at The Heritage School, Kolkata, before pursuing a BSc in Management with First-Class Honours and an MSc in Business with Marketing from the University of Warwick, UK.

Her years abroad also introduced her to a different relationship with nature. She observed how greenery and sustainability were thoughtfully integrated into homes, workplaces and everyday spaces rather than treated merely as decorative additions. That perspective remained with her when she returned to India.

Rather than moving immediately into an independent venture, Megha first joined her family business, gaining practical exposure to operations, distribution, customer relation- ships, people manage- ment and financial discipline. Her involvement in the FADA GenX programme further connected her with the aspirations and challenges of next-generation business leaders, while the Leadership Excellence Programme at IIM Ahmedabad strengthened her managerial and strategic perspective.

By combining small-town grounding, global education, family-business discipline and environmental consciousness, Megha identified an opportunity to profession-alise the way India experiences greenery. Through Daali, she is working to build more than a plant retail business: her larger vision is to create a scalable green lifestyle ecosystem that makes nature-led living easier to understand, adopt and sustain. Let’s read more about her journey in this one-on-one inter-action.

Building a purpose-driven brand requires balancing creativity, sustain ability, and business excellence. What leadership philosophy and core values have guided your decision-making and shaped Daali’s growth?

I believe nature itself teaches us that meaningful growth takes time and happens collectively. At Daali, I focus on building long-term value rather than chasing quick results. Sustainability is not a marketing message for us; it influences how we work with customers, employees, com- munities, and the environ-ment.

We are also working towards making our nursery solar-powered while creating employment and horticultural training opportunities for people from nearby villages. More than selling plants, I want Daali to become a community-driven initiative that encourages people to reconnect with nature and understand their responsibility towards protecting it.

How do you see the green lifestyle industry evolving and how is Daali responding to changing consumer expectations?

I see the green lifestyle industry evolving from a largely product-led and fragmented category into a more design conscious,
service-driven ecosystem. Greenery is no longer being treated as an aesthetic after thought it is increasingly becoming part of how homes, workplaces, hospitality spaces and gifting experiences are planned. Consumers today expect more than an attractive plant— they want dependable quality, transparent pricing, personalised recommendations, and clear care guidance.

At Daali, we are responding by combining education, design, and convenience. We help customers choose plants according to their space, lighting conditions, and lifestyle, rather than simply selling what looks appealing. Our presence in malls was also a deliberate decision to position greenery within a familiar lifestyle environment, making plant ownership more approachable and accessible. As the industry matures, our focus is on building trust, standardising the customer experience, and making green living easier to adopt and sustain.

Our objective is not merely to decorate workplaces, but to create healthier, happier environ- ments while making sustain ability a personal and everyday experience for emplo- yees

Could you elaborate on Daali’s core offerings and how they cater to different green-living requirements?

We identified a clear gap in Eastern India, where customers often had to visit multiple places for plants, planters, accessories care products, and landscaping support. Daali was created as an integrated green lifestyle destination that brings these requirements together under one roof.

Our portfolio includes indoor and outdoor plants, tabletop and statement planters, fertilisers, growing media, gardening accessories, plant gifting, styling, and customised greening solutions. We offer planters in materials such as ceramic, eco-friendly plastic, FRP, roto-moulded plastic, cement, and terracotta, allowing us to address different design, durability, and budget requirements.

Our solutions cater to individual homes as well as residential, corporate, hospitality, institutional, and large-scale landscaping projects. We are also expanding our nursery from three acres to 30 acres, strengthening our production capabilities and enabling us to grow a wider range of plants suited to local climatic conditions.

How do experiential initiatives help Daali make sustainability more engaging for consumers?

Sustainability becomes far more meaningful when people experience it rather than simply hear about it. One of our most successful initiatives took place during Van Mahotsav, India’s annual festival celebrating forests and tree planting, when we transformed Acropolis Mall, Kolkata, into an immersive green experience for 12 days.

More than 8000 people participated in our Green Learning Initiative and received certificates, while nearly 10,000+ people from across Kolkata wrote their pledges to nature on plantable seed paper and added them to our Living Pledge Tree. For every pledge received, we committed to growing two more plants.

We also gifted over 15,000+ plants, encouraging individuals to take ownership of and nurture a living plant. By making sustainability interactive and actionable, we aim to show that environmental impact does not always require major lifestyle changes; consistent and conscious everyday actions can collectively create meaningful change.

How do you see the green lifestyle industry evolving and how is Daali responding to changing consumer expectations?

I see the green lifestyle industry evolving from a largely product-led and fragmented category into a more design conscious, service-driven ecosystem. Greenery is no longer being treated as an aesthetic after thought; it is increasingly becoming part of how homes, workplaces, hospitality spaces, and gifting experiences are planned. Consumers today
expect more than an attractive plant— they want dependable quality, transparent pricing, personalised recommendations, and clear care guidance.

Our relationship also continues beyond the sale.Customers can reach out for guidance, and in certain cases, struggling plants are brought back to our nursery, where our horticulture team works to revive them. By reducing uncertainty and the fear of failure, we are helping make plant ownership feel approachable, achievable, and rewarding.

Our approach to corporate greenery began in our own office, where every employee was given a desk plant to nurture. It created a sense of ownership and made the workspace feel more positive and engaging. We now extend this philosophy to corporate clients through customised office plant scaping, employee and client gifting, and green solutions for cafés, boutiques, and commercial spaces.

Every solution is planned around the organisation’s space lighting, maintenance capacity, brand identity, and sustain-ability goals. Our objective is not merely to decorate workplaces, but to create healthier, happier environments while making sustainability a personal and everyday experience for employees.

What opportunities do you see emerging for Daali as demand for sustainable life style solutions grows across India?

We see significant opportunities across three connected areas: accessible retail, immersive green experiences, and customised solutions for businesses and institutions. Through our shop-in-shop partnership with Spencer’s, Daali is already present across multiple locations in Kolkata, allowing customers to discover plants during their regular shopping journey.

We are also preparing to establish more spaces across Kolkata, including larger experience centres where customers can explore plants, planters, styling ideas, and personalised care guidance in one destination.

Beyond retail, demand is growing for workplace plant scaping, hospitality and residential greening, conscious corporate gifting, and large-scale landscaping solutions. The opportunity lies not only in selling greenery, but in making it easier for people and organisations to bring nature meaningfully into everyday spaces.

What is your long-term vision for Daali and its role in shaping the future of green living?

My long-term vision is to build Daali into a pan-India green-lifestyle ecosystem and a household name that people trust at every stage of their journey with nature, from choosing and caring for their first plant to creating an entire green space.

We aim to scale through retail stores, experience centres, shop-in-shop formats, corporate solutions, community initiatives, and immersive campaigns. However, growth for us will not be measured only by the number of outlets or products.

It will also be reflected in the greener habits we inspire, the horticultural livelihoods we create, and the confidence we build around plant ownership. Ultimately, I want Daali to help organise and profes -sionalise the sector while making green living more accessible, aspirational, and sustainable across India.
