Satyabrata Satapathy

Co-Founder & CEO

Today, leaders in any industry are distin guished not only by their ability to optimise production processes but also by their vision to integrate advanced technologies and develop innovative solutions for complex challenges.

These trendsetters drive transformation through automation, sustainable practices, and cutting-edge research, pushing the boundaries of what manufacturing can achieve in sectors like aerospace, automotive, and logistics. Satyabrata Satapathy, the Co-founder, CEO, and Director of BonV Aero, a pioneering eVTOL (electric Vertical TakeOff and Landing) startup based in Odisha, India, is one such recognised leader.

Satyabrata’s journey into aerospace technology began with remarkable academic achievements. He earned a Gold Medal at SRM University in 2012 for his research on UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) control systems, signalling his early passion for autonomous flight technologies. Further sharpening his expertise, he pursued advanced studies in avionics at BITS Pilani, building a strong foundation for his future innovations.

Before founding BonV Aero, Satapathy gained expertise as a systems engineer at companies such as Voyzon and Reliance Asteria. His inventive mindset was recognised early on when he received the DRDO Best Innovation Award in 2010 for designing an autonomous off-road robotic platform, showcasing his ability to solve complex technical challenges creatively.

Driven by a shared vision with his co-founders, Satapathy set out to develop indigenous, deep-tech mobility solutions tailored to India’s difficult terrain and accessibility issues. What initially began as an idea to build air ambulances for remote areas evolved into creating heavy-lift UAVs capable of high-altitude deployment. These aircraft are designed to deliver vital payloads to areas where conventional infrastructure is lacking, addressing critical needs in defence and disaster response.

Under Satapathy’s leadership, BonV Aero is rapidly emerging as a national and global frontrunner in sustainable aerial mobility. His commitment to
indigenisation and innovation continues to propel the startups mission to revolutionise logistics and strategic transport, making him a notable figure in manufacturing and aerospace today.

How does Advanced AI contribute to ensuring operational reliability and enable a proactive main - tenance approach at BonV Aero?

At BonV Aero, advanced AI is integral to maintaining seamless and dependable operations. Our UAVs leverage intelligent edge-AI technology that continuously monitors critical elements such as structural integrity, sensor functionality, battery health, charging efficiency, and flight history. By analysing this data in real-time, we can anticipate maintenance needs before issues arise, significantly reducing unexpected failures and operational interruptions.

At BonV Aero, our longterm vision is to create the world’s most reliable and mission-ready aerial transport platforms

Beyond maintenance, AI also enhances our flight planning by dynamically adjusting routes, speeds, and altitudes to maximise efficiency and extend flight times. Even when operating in complex environments with weak or unavailable GPS signals, our AI-powered autonomous systems swiftly adapt to maintain safety and mission continuity. These smart, AI-driven systems together form a resilient and scalable framework that supports BonV Aero’s commitment to pioneering reliable, sustainable aerial logistics and defence solutions.

What are the anticipated market trends for the drone sector in India, and what are the main segments contributing to this expansion?

India’s drone market is rapidly expanding and is expected to reach $4–5 billion by 2030, with a CAGR exceeding 20 percent. This growth is driven by increased adoption of defence, agricultural automation, and last-mile logistics, supported by government programmes such as the PLI scheme and Drone Shakti.

Defence and high-altitude logistics lead the way, with drones used for surveillance, payload delivery, and strategic mobility. Agriculture and cargo delivery also offer significant opportunities. BonV Aero’s heavy-lift drones, designed for extreme altitudes and heavy payloads, are well-positioned to support these emerging sectors.

What is your take on the key trends and emerging technologies in drone manu -facturing and applications?
India’s drone industry is evolving rapidly driven by the need for indigenous, intelligent, and rugged aerial systems suited to diverse operational environ - ments. At BonV Aero, we envision the future in platforms that are modular, autonomous, and capable of high altitude, heavy-lift operations. A major trend is the shift towards multi-role UAVs that can seamlessly switch between logistics, ISR, medevac, and precision missions using modular payloads.

We are also witnessing a push for BVLOS capabilities, enabled by AI-driven navigation, obstacle avoidance, and route optimi- sation. Emerging techno - logies, such as predictive maintenance powered by AI, self tuning flight controllers, digital twin systems, and GPS-denied navigation, are reshaping reliability and performance standards.

Additionally, the use of lightweight, aerospace-grade materials and advancements in electric and hybrid propulsion are aligning drone development with sustain ability goals. BonV Aero is actively building on these innovations to deliver scalable, dual-use platforms that can support India’s defence, disaster response, and remote access logistics needs.

What is the future destination you are heading towards?

At BonV Aero, our long-term vision is to create the world’s most reliable and mission-ready aerial transport platforms. Over the next few years, we plan to expand our platform range to support payloads from 20 kg to 500 kg, with endurance exceeding 300 km.

We're advancing core technologies, such as AI-driven autonomy, intelligent flight planning, and predictive maintenance, to make our systems increasingly self-reliant and efficient. On the global front, we're pursuing certifications such as Blue UAS and Green UAS through initiatives like the I2A Launchpad in the U.S., while exploring strategic partnerships in the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia. With a new 32,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility and an expanding team, we’re building not just drones, but the foundation for future aerial mobility, including human transport.
