Established in 1919 as the Banaras Engineering College, it became the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University in 1968, while it was designated an Indian Institute of Technology in 2012. Located inside the Banaras Hindu University Campus, IIT (BHU) Varanasi in total has 16 departments, three inter-disciplinary schools and one Humanities & Social Sciences section.

    IIT (BHU) Varanasi has formerly been known as the Banaras Engineering College (BENCO), the College of Mining and Metallurgy (MINMET), the College of Technology (TECHNO) and the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU). Its establishment is intimately linked with that of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU).Thanks to the foresight of its founder, Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya, IIT (BHU) Varanasi has the credit of first starting degree classes in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Metallurgy and Pharmaceutics. Under his guidance, today it has grown to become a premier technical institute, giving around 50 thousand degrees and currently leading the nation with a strength of more than 7000 people.

    The institute has been involved in many great works that's uplifting the country's growth statures. Recently, the news had it that IIT-BHU has initiated research activities to overcome the internet availability limitation or absence of internet by establishing a LoRaWAN facility on the campus for research purposes. Moreover, IIT-BHU is looking forward to collaborate with the National Science Foundation (NSF), US for strengthening US-India comprehensive global strategic partnership.
