  • AS our neighbor, China has always been our largest trading partner and assures a favorable ecosystem to promising entrepreneurs as well as leaders who are determined to make it big. While many of the Indians have been immensely successful worldwide both personally and professionally bringing in both joy and a feeling of pride to the motherland, very few have represented the country in China. Among those few, Dev Raturi (Founder & Brand Ambassador, Amber Palace Indian Restaurant) is one of those rare multi-talented personalities who is not just a famous actor but also a successful entrepreneur owning a chain of 8 restaurants across China.

  • Top 10 Indian Leaders in China - 2022

China and India have taken different routes to enter the world economy, and that has resulted in their gaining complementary strengths. Some business leaders have learned to make use of both countries’ resources and capabilities. Therefore, in the process, they have become globally competitive. Multinational companies will only lose if they don’t take advantage of the complementarities between the two economies. If they embrace both countries, however, they can tap into diverse strengths almost as easily as Chinese and Indian companies will.

According to data from the Union Commerce Ministry, China was India’s second largest trading partner in the April-November period, after the US. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Hong Kong were the other top trading partners for India during the period. India’s official statistics on bilateral trade with China are updated only till November 2021. India's exports to China also grew to a record high of $28.1 billion in 2021, up 34.9 percent from $20.9 billion in 2020. Exports to China in 2021 were 56.5 percent higher than in 2019. According to the data, India's total trade with China in 2021 was worth $125.7 billion.

It will come as news to many Indians that several of India’s leading companies have a presence in China. A report in The Hindu of February 6th, 2020, states that ‘Shanghai tops the total investment from India, and is home to IT majors, including TCS, Infosys and NIIT. Zhejiang and Jiangsu are home to manufacturing units, including Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Mahindra & Mahindra, Laxmi Machine Works, Tata Jaguar Land Rover and Sundram Fasteners’. New opportunities, beneficial to both countries, will arise for both India and China as the latter rejigs a real estate-led economic model that has powered its spectacular growth over the last three decades and is now failing. This failure is best illustrated by the world’s most indebted real estate company Evergrande tottering towards a collapse under $300 billion of debt. All this makes China’s transition to newer technologies where it leads the world to power its future growth inevitable.

CEO Insights in this issue presents a list of `Top 10 Indian Leaders in China 2022' who have leveraged their extensive industry expertise and experience in the economic development of organizations and growth of state. The following list has been prepared after being closely scrutinized by a distinguished panel of judges including CXOs, analysts and editorial board.
