    India is among the top 12 destinations for biotechnology worldwide. The biotechnology industry in India comprises of 5,000 companies, and around 4,240 companies among these are startups. As of February 2022, the Department of Biotechnology has 2,143 ongoing projects. The sector can be divided into five segments  biopharmaceuticals, bio-services, bio-agriculture, bio-industrial and bioIT. The Indian biotechnology industry which stood at $63 billion in 2019 is expected to reach $150 billion by 2025, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.4 percent. By 2025, the contribution of the Indian biotechnology industry to the global biotechnology market is expected to grow by 19 percent. In the Indian biotechnology market, biopharmaceuticals is the largest segment, accounting for 62 percent share in 2020. The contribution of biotechnology in the GDP share has also grown up from 1.7 percent to 2.7 percent.

    Today, the biotechnology industry is witnessing new trends in growth, with foray into crucial sectors like pharmaceuticals, agriculture, industry, services and information technology. The biotechnology industry in India is strongly emphasizing on facilitating cuttingedge research and innovation through its various initiatives towards empowering the industry with a world-class infrastructure and numerous publicprivate partnerships. India holds approximately three percent share of global biotechnology industry. According to the Global Innovation Index Report 2019, India is ranked 52nd and is also the leader in the global supply of DPT, BCG and measles vaccines. The government is providing maximum support to ensure growth of the sector by allowing 100 percent foreign direct investment (FDI) under the automatic route for greenfield pharmaceuticals projects. The Covid has taught us the importance of being strong in the medical & research field, and being ready to tackle any emergency situation.
