TheThe Adani Group has signed a landmark agreement to build a 570 MW green hydroelectric plant in Bhutan's Chukha province, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy collaboration between India and Bhutan. Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, announced the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) following meetings with Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay in Thimphu.

“An absolutely fascinating meeting with Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay. We have signed an MoU for a 570 MW green hydro plant in Chukha province”, Adani shared on X, formerly Twitter. He praised Bhutan’s leadership for advancing the vision of King Jigme Khesar and spearheading broad infrastructure projects across the nation.

The collaboration extends beyond the hydro plant, encompassing transformative infrastructure initiatives. Gautam Adani highlighted plans to support Bhutan’s ambitious eco-friendly master plan for Gelephu Mindfulness City, which includes the development of large computing centres and data facilities.

Adani expressed his admiration for the King’s vision and commitment to making Bhutan a carbon-negative nation. “Excited to collaborate on these transformative initiatives, as well as on green energy management”, Adani stated.

This agreement continues the Adani Group’s focus on expanding its green energy footprint in neighboring countries. In November, Gautam Adani met the King and discussed potential contributions to Bhutan's green infrastructure development, aligning with the country’s goals for sustainable growth and environmental stewardship.

The 570 MW green hydro plant and associated infrastructure projects symbolize a deepening of bilateral ties, leveraging India’s expertise in renewable energy to support Bhutan’s sustainable development.
